Setting MX records for e-mail handling after I map domain to wordpress.com
-
I’m about to go live soon with the wordpress.com version of our new site, mapping the domain at godaddy to point to adrcsandy.wordpress.com. We currently handle our e-mail on our in-house server.
To keep the e-mail going to the right place, I plan to go into the custom DNS area at wordpress.com and create MX records to match where I want the e-mail to go. Does this sound right?
More questions in case someone reads this who really knows their domain stuff: If so, how long does it take for e-mail to start coming through again? Am I going to “lose” actual e-mails, or if there’s a little down time do they sort of queue up?
Thanks in advance! Will try to help someone else with something I know about!

If you purchased a domain from GoDaddy and are going to point it to a WordPress.com site, you’ll set up the name server entries at GoDaddy to use WordPress.com’s name servers. So you will want to set up your MX records at WordPress.com since they will be the master servers for your root domain.
If the external IP address of your mail server doesn’t change, you shouldn’t miss any mail coming in since any DNS servers that have the IP address cached from the old name servers will use the same IP address as any that look to the new name servers. The main time that would happen would be if you changed ISP’s and had to use a new external IP address for mail or if you just changed the external IP address for some other reason.

Okay, I think I’ve got it! I particularly like knowing the phrase “master servers for your root domain” — that is going to make me sound really smart around this office. :)
Thank you so much! I hope this all goes off without a hitch.
