Setting previously published posts to private

I have been merging content from old previously published posts into one new post and setting the old posts to private. The old posts however still have categories and tags assigned to them which I’ve since read is not a good idea. The old posts have been appearing to me in category and tag lists as ‘private’ but I wondered if google has still been able to read these old posts and may be reading duplicate content. Could this be affecting my rankings?

  • Hi there,

The posts having categories and tags assigned doesn’t matter. If you set a post as private, only logged in admins on the site can see that there is a post. Non-admins on your site won’t even see a gap in your site where the private post should be, and private posts are not included in your RSS feed or sitemap, so search engines are not able to see and index them.

Of course, if these posts were previously published they might already be indexed with search engines, but they’ll eventually disappear from those indexes as search engines find they no longer exist. This won’t lead to duplicate content, though.
