setting table column widths

My post /2014/07/24/ukrainian-aircraft-losses/ contains just a table. I can see the HTML generated from my email is valid, but the first 3 column widths display too narrow, making the table hard to read.
So I edit the <td> tags on the first row, giving:
<td align=”left” valign=”top” width=”120″>Date</td>
etc, but it doesn’t take effect.If I copy the HTML to a file in the docroot of a web server and view it with a browser, it looks how I want it, so its not the HTML that is wrong. This implies wordpress is pre-processing the HTML somehow, but under what rules?

Hi there. It could be that WordPress is stripping out some of the code. To see what code is allowed her, see: http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/
There is also a support doc on using html to create tables, but it doesn’t say anything about specifying column width: http://en.support.wordpress.com/advanced-html/#tables

although how anyone is supposed to find that I don’t know.After editing the code, it still doesn’t work.
wordpress is making things more difficult for me, not easier.
I’m seriously considering abandonning it rather than debugging it. -

Would you please post a section of your code here, say for the first few lines of your table, then we can take a look for you. Post the codes between backtics (or use the “code” button above the textbox) otherwise the system will render it or strip it out and we won’t be able to see it.although how anyone is supposed to find that I don’t know
I think most of the users here don’t know much about code (myself neither, but I’m learning) and don’t want to know, so the support docs don’t really go into the advanced stuff like this. Luckily we have users like Panos who write tutorials for those of us who do want the greater control using html offers.

Sorry, but I just don’t see where you edited the code to comply with the most current standards.On the other hand, perhaps FireFox31 can interpret it? Are you using the latest browser / operating system? I’m not sure what is happening.
Writing tables is not for beginners. If you don’t want to learn html, then try Windows LiveWriter. Note, it’s not for Macs but lots of other volunteers have mentioned that it does make tables which you can use here on WordPress.com.

I didn’t write the code, it was copied from LibreOffice Calc and pasted into a Thunderbird email, and mailed to my wordpress account. I added the width=”nnn”, that’s all. FF31 interprets it correctly if WP would only leave it alone, (see http://palloy.tk/ukraine-aircraft-losses.htm ) but apparently WP knows better and took the widths out.

Looking at your source code for http://palloy.wordpress.com/2014/07/24/ukrainian-aircraft-losses/ , I see that you have included % widths for your table. Also I can see your table just fine. I don’t really understand your question!
There is a lot of junk-code in your table and it may not be displaying in other browsers such as Explorer (in in current and older manifestations), Safari, Opera, Chrome, older FF, and so on. Is this your question?
