Setting up a good 3 layered structure for content on Blask theme

  • Unknown's avatar

    hi there,
I’m going round in circles trying to work out how to layout and structure my site to make it easy (And automated in future) to navigate 3 layers of content when they are not completely separable (e.g. because a project included multiple skills and fields of interest):
    > Fields of interest (e.g. futures; energy)
    > Skills (e.g. research; advocacy)
    > Projects (the project overview which combines multiple skills and fields)

I have started with creating portfolio projects for each field of interest, and then wanted hyperlinked excerpts of the skills applied in that field, which when you click on the skill area opens a new page with a list of the projects (not as defined in this theme but in real life!). i.e. there needs to be a nested approach to deliver the content via the field first, then the skills applied in that field, and finally the project itself.

I have tried various combinations of tags, types, projects, pages and have got completely lost and at a dead end.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Isabel,

    What a brain bender :-)

    Hopefully I’m understanding your requirements.

    How about:

Project Type = Field of interest – this seems to be the level you’d like the projects split by when you look at the Portfolio page.

Project Tag = Skill – the project tag can be used in a link e.g. http://www.isabelbottoms.com/project-tag/research/

This tag link will show all projects tagged with ‘research’.

Hi there, For help with your site using the open source WordPress (org) software you’ll want to head over to https://wordpress.org/support where they likely have more experience with the type of issue you are having. If you don’t have a username on the ORG forums you can register one on that page. I also suggest searching the forums there for a similar issue before posting.

There is some information on setting up the Blask theme at https://wordpress.com/themes/blask/ and for further help with Blask https://wordpress.org/support/theme/blask

Just to clarify, this support forum assists users of WordPressdotcom hosted sites. Standalone WordPress (org) and WordPressdotcom (where we are) are different entities with separate documentation and support forums; more information about the differences: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    Best wishes

Ooh yes, should have mentioned that.

hi Nick thanks for giving it a go!

I think 1 layer is still missing as I would need one for individual projects

    So it goes like this:

    field > skill < project
design > research < Energy Swarm project

And I need to be able to embed project extracts within both field and skill pages, so I agree skills should just be a tag but how does one get make the projects embed’able within that hierarchy?

Didn’t know about the .org/.com thing but my domain is registered with wordpress.com so I was auto-linked here…

(just to clarify as I’ve seen what you mean now above: I would like fields as content not just a form of categorisation, hence the separating them out as a layer in the hierarchy.)
