Setting up a multi-lingual site

  • Unknown's avatar

My current site linear33.wordpress.com is in Finnish and points to http://www.linear33.com. I would now like to set up exactly the same site but with English content and use my other domain http://www.linear33.co.uk for it. Is it possible to do this without having to pay for a Premium upgrade and Forefront theme for the second time? In addition to these cost savings, it would be useful from a managment perspective, having the same Dashboard for both sites as I’ll need to produce the same content in two languages.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

Unfortunately you wouldn’t be able to have two separate sites with your specific translation in one Dashboard pointing to two separate domains. There are a couple options here.

    1) You can have two separate sites (two Dashboards) and you can create the translation yourself and have two separate domains. linear33.com will point to your Finnish site and linear33.co.uk will point to your English site. You will have to create two separate posts each time and maintain both sites. This would also mean that you would have to purchase the Forefront theme again if you want the same look.

    2) You can have one domain and have Google translate your site into English as seen here:

    https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=fi&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=www.linear33.com&edit-text=

You can add that link to a Text Widget and title it the English Translation. This would essentially allow you to have only one Dashboard and only maintain one language, but the translation would be done via Google Translate. So this would be more cost-effective and time-consuming, but one of the downsides is that the translation may not be as accurate and you’d only have one domain.

I’m sorry, but these are the only options that come to my mind at this time on WordPress.com.

Let me know if you have any questions with this!

Thank you! Unfortunately, the Google Translate option is out of the question. What if I set up a subdomain for the linear33.com site for the English content? Does my theme support that?

You can create a subdomain, but this wouldn’t solve the issue as you would still have only one Dashboard and one site. You’d still be in the same boat unfortunately. At this time, it’d be best to go with solution number 1 if Google Translate is not an option.

If you only want one Dashboard, you can create Category Pages in which you create both English and Finnish posts and just have a page for all English posts. This English Posts only page can be added to a Custom Menu. Everything would be under one domain though.

Thank you, that’s very helpful. If I went with Solution 1 in your initial reply, is there a way of copying pages from one dashboard to another?

What you can do is Export your first site and Import it into your new site. This will bring over all your content, or you can just bring over your pages if you want.
