setting up a web site
-
I had a few questions:
1) What do I need to do to make the site live?
2) I’ve set up my web site but now what do I pay for? Is there someone that can help me through it?The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi –
By default the site is live so there’s nothing you need to do about that. If you aren’t ready to share it with the world, then you can edit the privacy settings. Here’s how: https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/
The second part, payment. You do not need to pay for anything. Free sites or blogs are included with your account. There are upgraded plans available that you can compare at wordpress.com/pricing/
Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi Liz,
Are you an employee of wordpress? I’m confused about how this all works? I am very surprised also that I don’t need to pay anything. Is there a catch? I thought I had to pick a domain name and pay for that and also pay a price for the web “host” Can you clarify?
Thanks,
Stephanie -
Hi Stephanie…
WordPress is the greatest blogging/ website plaform in the world.
However, people sometimes misunderstand that there is only one kind of wordpress.
WordPress consists of two, that’s hosted (wordpress.com = free with some limitations) and non-hosted (wordpress.org = paid, but you have much more freedom).
If you choose the free version, your domain will definitely end with wordpress.com so that it becomes yourdomain.wordpress.com .
If you want to have your own domain and more flexibility, you should choose a non-hosted.
There are many wordpress hosting service providers to choose. This big site, wordpress.com, also make it available here.

Thanks,
I am not setting this up as a blog site. Is that OK? I am just using it as my website. -
Hi Stephanie –
You can create a free blog or website on WordPress.com. Our themes can do either. A blog is just a type of website. The difference is only in how you customize and set it up.
Blogs, for example are updated with posts by a single author on a regular basis. Websites are built out on pages with static information.
That said, there are 2 versions of WordPress as sanpaving has mentioned. What we do at WordPress.com is different from using the WordPress installation with a hosting company. See here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
Here are some great tips to help you build a website with WordPress.com (for free).

I work for Automattic the company behind WordPress.com.
One of the biggest differences between WordPress.com and self hosted WordPress is that you have a dedicated support staff to help you on WordPress.com.
Without any upgrades on the account you’ll find support in these public forums. You can upgrade the plan on your account to receive private email and live chat support, but again, this is not required to have a website. Those plan features and details are available to you at wordpress.com/pricing/
