setting up blog for facebook posts
-
I recently started my blog and just wanted to share a particular post on my personal Facebook page until I can set up a Facebook page for the blog as well. I am not able to do that though as each post that appears on my home page does not have its own url. I have a separate “welcome” page which has it’s own url, but I don’t want to do a separate page for each post. How can I get a separate url for each post without doing a separate page?
Also, if I don’t put an image in a particular post, will Facebook grab my blavitar for that post (once I create the page and set up automatic posts), or will it leave a blank square? Thanks.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I am just seeing now that if I click on “view post” above what I’ve written in editing mode, I get an individual url for that post that I could use to post it that way (although without any kind of thumbnail even though my image in the post is larger than the 200×200 requirement for Facebook), but if I were not logged in or were a friend looking at it who wanted to share, there would be no individual url.

Hi again,
Before I was just looking at the url when on the home page, but I see now that if I select any of the posts under “recent posts” that the individual url’s for each post do show up. I just wanted to be sure anyone could copy and paste the url into a FB post for now until I establish a FB page and set it to automatically post there that can then be shared. I hope when I do that, the individual posts will be shared to FB and not just the site url. Would that be the case? And what do I need to do to get either an image from a post or the blavitar to show up as a FB thumbnail? I want to be sure that will happen before I set up the FB page. Thanks again.

This guide provides instructions for how to connect your WordPress.com blog to various social networking services. Once connected to a service, all of your WordPress.com posts will be shared with that service automatically. http://en.support.wordpress.com/publicize/
Please read Images in Publicize http://en.support.wordpress.com/publicize/#images-in-publicize
We have no control over the images that Facebook chooses to display or when they choose to flush their image caches. We really only send them the URL of the post, and they hunt through that for the excerpt and images to include.

I am seeing nothing but the url show up right now if I try to copy and paste into a FB post. Before I was at least getting the title of the blog or post and first few lines but no picture. Do I need to change my WP settings? I am trying to do this somewhat anonymously, so I don’t want to have the posts set to post to my personal FB page, but do I need to allow them to be shared or something? Hopefully, this is all helpful information and not a bother. Just trying to be clear in what I am looking to do but can’t right now.

Sorry but I choose not to use Facebook. The last thing I want is an account in a data-mining operation site so I’ll tag this thread for Staff assistance because I do not know how to help you. Another Volunteer may answer prior to Staff but I tagged the thread so it will not fall through the cracks and escape attention. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

OK, thank you. Some of what you provided was helpful. Things keep changing too, which is making this difficult to figure out. I’m all set now if I want to copy and paste the url for the site itself but still getting nothing but the url for individual posts, whereas before I was getting the title and first few lines but nothing for a thumbnail. Just trying to figure out if this is a WP or FB issue and if there’s anything I should do differently.

WordPress.com is a terrible aggregator for Facebook posts. It works MUCH MUCH better the other way around.
Every separate post which appears on your blog DOES have a unique URL, whether you can find it or not. You can see them all by going to the dashboard Posts->All Posts page.
FB frequently changes the way they pull images and content from our sites here. If you paste the URL of a specific post they MAY pull the Featured image. If you have none set as featured they often pull the second one, for reasons I know not. But they change regularly and there is nothing we can do here to keep up with the changes. As soon as you learn how to cope with them, they change again.

Any idea why I get the desired result with the url for the main site but if I use the url for a specific post, I don’t even get the title of the blog post and a couple of lines of text like I was before? Right now I am not even getting a blank white box or anything but the url at this point with the individual post url’s. I would be happy if I could at least get the individual blog title in there for now.
It doesn’t appear that my theme (crafty) has the “featured image” feature, but I am only putting one image in each post at most. I did run the FB debugger yesterday and then made sure any images were more than 200 dpi in both directions afterwards (had a couple set right at 200 for the smaller dimension prior) and then ran the debugger again which then showed no problems with images, so I think I’ll be all set with a thumbnail once I can get more than just the url in there for the individual posts. Thanks again.

I just ran the url’s for each of the 3 individual posts I have posted so far through the FB debugger, and each one says it will show up as I would want them to with either the image within the post or the blavitar (for the one post without an image) for the thumbnail and then the blog title and first couple lines, but none of them show more than the url when I try to copy and paste into a FB post.
I think this all has to do with the fact that the blog itself and none of the posts are set up to publicize to FB because I don’t want the blog linked to my personal FB page and was waiting to make sure things would post correctly before setting up a FB page for the blog. Can I assume that if I were to do that and have the posts set to publicize to that FB page, they would show up OK, based on what the FB debugger is telling me (aside from the fact that FB can be unpredictable)?
Shouldn’t anyone be able to copy and paste the url for the individual blog posts into a FB page though and have all the information show up without the blog being linked to that account? It was working for me the other day except for the issue with no thumbnail, but I didn’t change anything between then and now except for to fix the images. And again, it works for the site itself but not the individual posts.

Hi there,
You should be able to copy the URL for an individual blog post and share it directly to Facebook, without setting up the Publicize feature here at WordPress.com. However, WordPress.com can’t control how Facebook formats the shared post, unless the Facebook debugger returns an error. (If you do see an error in the debugger, I can investigate that and see if we can do anything about it on this end.)
If there’s a particular post you’d like me to look into, please let me know!

Thanks for your help. I ran all the posts through the debugger yesterday and got no errors. They all said they would show up just as I want them to. I don’t know what changed between yesterday and today, but now it is working fine except the ones with images in the posts are showing up with pictures much bigger than thumbnail size on Facebook, but when the blavitar is used it shows up as a thumbnail. I’m sure that’s a FB thing that I can’t do much about.

Yep, Facebook may format different posts (like posts with images) differently from other posts when you share them on Facebook. Sharing a post manually (instead of using the Publicize feature) should give you a bit more control over how it looks, but in the end there are certain things about sharing posts on Facebook that can’t be controlled.
