Setting up Chapters to dates or Chapters to Select

Hi! I am publishing a story bit by bit. Friends and Fans have commented that they have to scroll for so long to get to some of the beginning chapters. I am using the “Fiore” theme and I love it. I don’t understand all the terminology in the instructions given in support, and therefore, afraid to try anything before I do, because I don’t want to mess up my site while the story is still ongoing. I would love your assistance. First question: Can I set the book format on the Fiore Theme? I would like to provide my readers the opportunity to quickly pick out “Part 18, or whatever, and get to where they left off reading. Which method would be best for the theme I use now. Oh, and I did see that I would need to remove other archival stuff so it would not interfer. Thank you so much for your clarification and instruction.

  • Hi there. The easiest way to create an index would be to create a new page and use the Display Posts shortcode. It differs from the Archive shortcode in that you can specify that it only display posts in a specific category, for example, rather than all your posts, and it will update automatically each time you publish a new chapter in that category. Just note you can only display a maximum of 100 posts/chapters with this shortcode.

I see your chapters all belong to the category “serial killer”. This code should display your chapters, title only, in ascending order:

    `[display-posts category="serial-killer" include_excerpt="false" order="ASC"]‘

Paste that code directly into the page in the visual editor view. Here is the support document with detail on how you can further customise the shortcode: https://en.support.wordpress.com/display-posts-shortcode/

Something else you may want to consider: I see you display full posts on your home page. If you insert the more-tag in your posts the home page will only display the text that appears before the tag with a link for users to click to read the full post. That should cut down on the amount of scrolling to find posts on your home and archive pages.

Instructions for using the more-tag can be found here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/
