setting up home page

    I have a theme that shows the home page as a grid of photos. I have loaded the theme and all the plugins it suggests. I have jetpack with the grid turned on. I can upload a ton of photos to the page, but they are just in a single row. the help at the top of the page says ‘To create an image gallery, select the images to add and click the “Create a new gallery” button.’ but I can not find this ‘gallery’ button anywhere. does anyone have EASY answers?
