Setting up my site
-
Hi there,
I’m new here!
I’ve played around with themes, I’ve read the instructions.. and I’m still really confused. I was hoping you could help me please.
My site is based around food/travel, with the site content sectioned geographically (i.e. travelling to Latin America? Find great food in the region here… then choose a country from the child page.. then a region.. now here’s a bunch of restaurants and travel tips).
I’d like it to be a site, rather than a blog.
I would like a theme that supports a logo, is light, bright and minimal and can provide for the home page to display multiple tiles (each with an image and short intro text), which link through to the different geographic regions I’m writing about. (Think something like this but less tiles and less text http://www.lonelyplanet.com/nicaragua/sights).
I don’t know if the answer to this is using a grid page, or a portfolio.. or something else entirely.
Could you please recommend a free theme which will support this? Or is it possible with multiple themes, I just have to learn some CSS? :-) Please say no!
Thanks in advance,
Corrie

Hello there!
According to your needs, I’ll make a few suggestions…if these suit you, GREAT. If not, just let me know what you like/don’t like about a theme, and I’ll see if we have others that suit those specifications.
I think this might be one of your best bets:
https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/goran/
Need more? Here we go!:
https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/cubic/
https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/port/
https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/duet/
https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/boardwalk/Two themes above are free, and two are premium.
Could you please recommend a free theme which will support this? Or is it possible with multiple themes, I just have to learn some CSS? :-) Please say no!
Only one theme can be installed at a time on a WordPress.com site. If it comes to CSS, depending on the level of support you need, we can help out! But, I think we may be able to cover your needs with a good theme choice.
I hope this helps! If you have any other concerns, drop me a note. Thanks much!

Hey there,
Thank you so much for your help.
I’ve had a look at the themes, and I really like ‘Cubic’, however I believe it isn’t responsive. Is this correct? Would something like ‘Sketch’ be better? I did try ‘Sketch’ a while back, but couldn’t make it look at all like the demo template.
Also, I applied ‘Cubic’ to my site and it seemed to look nothing like the template demo either.. how do I go about making my site looking like the template? Is this what I need CSS skills for, or are you able to advise as you suggested?
Another issue I’m having is that my home page isn’t displaying as I’d like it to, and I can’t find options to change the way it looks. I.e. I don’t want it to be titled, I don’t want to allow comments, I simply want a main nav, with tiled, linked images below.
Thanks in advance,
Corrie

Hi Corrie!
Cubic is responsive and mobile-ready. It will move that three-column layout on desktop to a two or one-column layout on smaller screen sizes.
Sketch is also a really great theme, but to get that nice grid look you’ll be using our Portfolios feature, while Cubic uses posts.
The most important thing to make your site look like the Cubic demo is to make sure you set a Featured Images on every post. That’s how Cubic knows to display those big images on the homepage or in the post’s header.
Another issue I’m having is that my home page isn’t displaying as I’d like it to, and I can’t find options to change the way it looks. I.e. I don’t want it to be titled, I don’t want to allow comments, I simply want a main nav, with tiled, linked images below.
To remove the title, open up your Customizer here:
Choose the “Site Title, Tagline, and Logo” tab, then uncheck the box next to “Display Header Text.”
You’re currently running the Sela theme, and it looks like you’ve correctly setup your tiled links using Sela’s Grid Page Template.
Let me know if you have other questions about Cubic, Sketch, or Sela.
