Setting up my web page
-
I am trying to Archive a document. Currently, the archive shows date only information. I would like to add a title. Is that possible?
-
-
-
There is instruction on customizing archive widget here
https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/archives-widget/
you can only change the title of the widget. Unfortunately you can’t show title of your post.
-
-
Yes, I see what you mean. It now says, “pages” without any reference to what the page is. No much use really as people won’t know how to look for a given item.
-
There is a workaround to show all your posts in the sidebar.
Create a widget > text (https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/text-widget/)
In the text field, type:
[archives]It will looks like this:

Ah, a quick look tells me that we’re on the right lines! That is exactly what I want to do. Many thanks!

Oh no! I seem to have lost two pages. The About Me page is working fine, but two others seem to have disappeared. Is that possible?

Did you delete the page? If you did, you can restore them back.
Perhaps you should create a post instead of page. To learn the difference between post and page, please read the documentation here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/
-
Actually I have found one, but not in the trash. I think it had been linked to the widget that I changed. Now, I am trying to attach it somehow but the title doesn’t come up. This really is very hard, isn’t it.
-
I understand your frustation Christine, but don’t worry we’re here to help.
I believe you had created several pages instead of posts. It doesn’t show up on your homepage because you have to manually put it somewhere as a link (either in widget or in menu).
Try to create several posts with dummy content (you can always edit or remove them later).
If you need to learn more on how to create post, check this:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/Also, from your current blog layout, it seems that you also had set the front page to the ‘static page > about me’. If you want the homepage to show chronological order of your post, you should change it to ‘your latest post’ instead. To change this setting, please check this page:
-
The thing is, Elte, I do not want a chronological order. I want to keep the static page because I may add things to it that will be relevant to all the pages. Each page will address a particular painting or image, which is why I want them separate but nameable. Would a blog be easier?
-
To use post or page it’s entirely up to you, but post allow you to categorize entry.
Now the front page is set to about me, is that already what you want?
Also, you want the sidebar to list pages. However, you want to manually insert what pages to be included. Let me know if that’s what you try to achieve.
-
Thank you, yes, I can see that post has its advantage over page.
Front page is set to about me – yes that’s what I want.
Yes, I want the sidebar to list pages. But that is why I mentioned the blog because it seems to do it automatically.
I cannot find a page that calls itself “dashboard” as illustrated on YouTube. I think I am on a dashboard though. It just doesn’t give confidence that my pages aren’t the same as those.
I’m working on a MacBook Pro. Does that make a difference?
-
Working on mac or pc doesn’t make a difference. You’re seeing different dashboard because wordpress.com now has 2 dashboard, the new dashboard and classic dashboard. The new dashboard is using newer technology, however it’s not complete yet. But, you don’t have to worry about that for now.
If you want the sidebar to list all the pages automatically, it would be very easy to do.
However, you mentioned before that you want to manually insert the pages, that require some workaround like creating a menu, and assign that menu on the sidebar.
Let me know which one you want :)
