Setting up my web page
-
Thanks!
Regarding, “wordpress.com now has 2 dashboard, the new dashboard and classic dashboard. The new dashboard is using newer technology, however it’s not complete yet. But, you don’t have to worry about that for now.” No wonder I’ve been confused! I must have spent an hour yesterday trying to figure out why my dashboard didn’t exist!
I only ‘mentioned before that I want to manually insert the pages’ because I couldn’t find any other way of doing it. The thing is, I don’t want every time I post or add a page to be a huge problem i.e. like forgetting a widget has to be added each time then losing all my text.
I’m going to try for about an hour today and if I don’t succeed I will either write as a blog or forget the whole thing. I know you said you are here to help, and thanks for that, but it is me who has to spend all the time trying to set up the pages and failing.
For now…

Now had success at putting the name of the painting I’m talking about on the sidebar (above ‘About me’) However, it isn’t ‘live’.
-
Instead of confusing you even further, here’s my suggested workflow.
– Add new post, with the title of the post being the title of the painting. Add the painting image in the editor. Once you have done, click the publish.
Don’t worry about the posts being showed because you have set the front page to ‘about me’– Create a widget > text (https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/text-widget/)
In the text field, type:
[archives]It will looks like this:
http://cl.ly/3b0k19253P35I’ve created video instruction here, hopefully you get better idea.

OK. Partial success but I can see where I went wrong! So that is progress. Your video was very useful, and while my pages didn’t always look like those on the video, I now know enough to know what to do there.
I am going to have to go back and edit my mistakes.
It doesn’t matter which order the paintings are in.
When I revise or edit what I’ve written, do I have to go through all that rigmarole again? Or will the settings hold?
42 Degrees. No aircon. But pleased with my little bit of success!
Thanks.

42 degree! I know how you feel. Was staying in Melbourne for a year back in 2009.
The setting will hold as long you didn’t delete and create a new one. WordPress recognise the post/page by id number, not the title or content, so you don’t have to worry about that.
You’ll learn along the way. It’s getting there, I can already see the posts you wrote on the sidebar :)
Cheers!

Getting there, thanks to you. I can’t face revising stuff just now, but at least I know what I should be doing. I may write (edit) the current text to that painting as any viewer would wonder what on earth they were looking at!
Whew.

Hi Elte, glad you can see my posts but now there are duplicated!!! WHAT ON EARTH HAVE I DONE???? Grrr. Cross with myself.
-
OK, that panic is over. Duplicate erased; must remember to take my blood pressure tablets in future.
-
Hi Elte, Hope you’re proud of me! Thanks for all your help. I have made some changes and am pleased with them.
New issue. I cut and pasted an essay into a post and lost all the references. Is there a way of referencing with numbers (as in an essay) ? I searched the forum and couldn’t find any suitable answers.
Thanks.

Glad you’re still here with wordpress :)
Unfortunately there’s no easy way to easy referencing in wordpress yet. Microsoft Word and others are fine word processor for producing documents to be shared or printed, with a wealth of print-based options for indexing, and producing table of contents. As a web publishing tool, however, it is a little less than ideal and produces very messy HTML. The same applies when using Google Docs, OpenOffice, or other word processors.
You can use markdown editor in wordpress, it require a little bit of understanding, but you should be comfortable in a minute or so.

Crikey. You certainly know how to scare an old lady.
I might try an old student way of doing it. Not elegant but at least acknowledges the authors.
