Setting up new site

I currently have a site on Wix and my domain is registered through Go Daddy. I want to start creating a new site on WordPress but don’t want to transfer my domain until I’m ready to switch over. Is there a way to do that?

  • Hi there,

If you want to make the site here on WordPress.com, create a new site at https://wordpress.com/start/site/

Select the free WordPress.com address on the domains step, and then you can build your site at that address, with or without a paid plan, until you’re ready to switch over your domain.

    kokkieh,

I’m trying to do the same; however, when I go through the https://wordpress.com/start/site/ pages, I always land on a page asking for my credit card.

I don’t want to pay $300 up front for something I may not like. How can I try building my site on WordPress first, and then pay if I like the usability and experience of WordPress?

I’ve tried this several times and I can’t find the “start for free” option that’s advertised. Thanks.

  • Yep, there’s no reason to pay up front until you are comfy with everything. Getting started with a free site is a great way to go.

    Try clicking through these steps.

    – sign in to WordPress.com
    – click on My Sites from upper left corner
    – look at the bottom of the left hand side of the screen for + new WordPress site
    – you should be able to register a free site on the account
    – free sites end with .wordpress.com , if you try to use a .com tld for example you’ll be prompted to buy a plan. The plans are required for custom domains.

Write back if that does not work.
