Setting up Portfolio pages for multiple artists

    Hi WordPress,
We are a community of artists hoping to set up a web site where each of us can have a page of our own. I thought it would be good to use the Portfolio functionality to do this with each artist as a separate project. I am realising this isn’t working as I had imagined. So do you have any recommendations? Would it be better to have a page for each artist, and if so, how would I organise to give each artist access to update their own page, but not other people’s pages?

Any other suggestions for how to manage this will be gratefully appreciated. If we can work it out we will take an upgrade to Premium, so if a Premium Theme is more suited to our goals than Sketch, can you also advise that?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

    Regards,
    Lisa

  • Hi Lisa, interesting question! It depends on how you’d like to set things up.

Will each artist be adding their own content?

You could just create a separate portfolio for each artist, then link to each artist in a menu.

Or, you might like using a blog format and letting each artist upload posts as authors. Then all of the posts would go into one area, or you could set up links to each artist’s list of posts.

Posts would notify site followers of new work and what not (treating them as news items.) Note that wouldn’t work with every theme out there, but there are some lovely photoblogging themes that could work well.

Thank you – yes, I am trying to set up with portfolios showing mediums and then artist pages based on shortcodes and menus. Just wondered if there was a better way to do it. :-) The idea is that each artist has a log-in and loads up their own content which is then shown in a logical manner for a group of artists. So, the Portfolio page will be based on medium (photography, watercolour etc) and I was hoping to use the author to construct a personal bio page for each artist with the shortcode to add their latest work below that. I am wondering if it would work better to have a Portfolio Tag as each artist’s name and then use Portfolio Shortcode for both.
    {roving a little tricky but I will persist. :-)
    Thanks,
    Lisa

  • Hi Lisa,

I would suggest you use portfolio types for the medium, and tags for the artists. You can use types for the artists as well, but it might just be easier to use different taxonomies for the two different items you want to be able to sort by.

Then you can create the correct shortcode accordingly for each artist page. If you also want a page showing all projects in a particular medium, irrespective of artist, you can just use the regular portfolio-type archive page for that, adding it directly to your menu – archive pages are dynamic, meaning they update automatically as new content is added, and are something different from a static page where you can manually add your own content.

If artists will be adding their own projects, just make sure they all understand which types and tags to add to their projects.

Thanks kokkieh, that makes sense to me, so I will do that.
