Setting up separate BLOG page using Connect Theme

  • Unknown's avatar

I am trying to set up a separate blog page using the Connect theme. I’ve created the page, WILL GRAY’S BLOG, there’s a menu tab for it, but I can neither add posts to the page or toggle to it from the menu tab. What am I missing?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Will,

When I visit your site http://ajustmanishardtofind.com/, I do see a tab for Will Gray’s Blog. You have set up this page to display your blog posts. All posts you create will appear on this page.

When I visit your list of Posts, I see them all on the Will Gray’s Blog page:
    https://ajustmanishardtofind.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php

    You mention:

I’ve created the page, WILL GRAY’S BLOG, there’s a menu tab for it, but I can neither add posts to the page or toggle to it from the menu tab.

However, I am able to see all your posts, and I can move back and forth between the rest of your tabs and this one.

Perhaps you already fixed the issue you were having. If you are trying to accomplish something different, I’m not entirely certain, so please do let me know exactly what you need to do, and I can assist!

    Thanks much.

Thanks, but when I click on the menu tab I created for a separate blog page, I don’t go anywhere, just stay on front page. I have to scroll down to see posts. All posts still seem to lay down under the header on front page. I don’t mind leaving the posts I already have there, but I want new posts to go to the new blog page — which I can only seem to access through my dashboard “All Pages”. I’m pretty sure my reading setting or something is off.

    Thanks for you help.

    Hey Will!

Your front page is currently set up to be your main blog page. That’s why when you click the tab you stay there: your front page and your blog page are one and the same.

You have the option to create a static front page, and a separate blog page, if you’d like. Then those pages will not be ‘combined.’ Those instructions are here:

    Set the Homepage

Does this suit your needs? Let me know, please! Thanks :)

Can I simply publish the new blog page and set the Reading Settings as indicated? Doesn’t seem to allow me to go to that page with the Menu Tab. Same problem as before. Maybe I really have to publish a new front page and name it too? If so, is there some way to keep everything that’s on the front page now? Thanks for your patience. I really don’t mean to make this complicated. That’s why I’m frustrated. Has anyone else used the Connect theme and posted to front page and then decided they wanted a separate blog page?
Thanks, for any additional insights you can supply.

    Will,

Quick question: do you want two pages that have the exact same content? If so, I can talk you though this setup.

Has anyone else used the Connect theme and posted to front page and then decided they wanted a separate blog page?

I’ve never seen a case like this :) But it doesn’t mean we can’t make it happen! Some folks will publish all their blog posts to their front page, but have other tabs that contains just a specialized group of these posts. An example would be a recipe site that has ALL the blog posts/recipes on the front page, but has separate menu tabs for Dessert, Entrées, Appetizers.

Doesn’t seem to allow me to go to that page with the Menu Tab.

I am finding the tab takes me to that page. If I navigate through all your pages, when I click “Will Gray’s Blog,” I am always taken back to that page. It just so happens that you also chose it to appear as the first page that your visitors see.

Would it make more sense if you moved “Will Gray’s Blog” to the first tab in your menu? Then, it would be clear that it was your homepage, and the first tab that people see when they enter your site.

Can I simply publish the new blog page and set the Reading Settings as indicated?

I am more than happy to help you make this work, but I’m not entirely certain what you mean by’ publish the new blog page.’ Are asking about duplicating the current blog page? If so, what would your menu items be if you added this new blog page?

    Thanks again!

Thanks. I’m open to suggestions. I guess I want the front page to reflect my collaboration with Jeanne but not have my posts lay down next to her picture and contact info. So I was hoping to move existing posts from front page to a new blog page and have all new posts there as well. Then they could all be in one place. Is that possible to do?Sent from my iPhone

    Will,

Ok…I think we’re getting someplace…there are a couple ways you could do accomplish this:

I guess I want the front page to reflect my collaboration with Jeanne but not have my posts lay down next to her picture and contact info.

If you decide to keep the front page as-is, does Jeanne’s photo and contact info need to appear on your homepage? Did you know that you could assign a widget to only appear on certain pages? So, suggestion number one: move the widget.

Suggestion number two: divide the posts. You could categorize your posts (by author, for instance) and have all posts appear on one of your pages, and only your posts appear on another.

    Thoughts? Thanks!

Yay, i think so too. So how do I move the sidebar widget for Jeanne to her page “BLOG /NOVEL IDEAS”? And then, can I have new posts go two places? Just by categorizing them differently? How does that work? Sorry to ask you to walk me through two things: moving widget and redirecting posts, but if I can solve these two issues, I think it will be clearer who’s posting what. Thanks!
Also: Do you think the front page works? You really have to scroll down to see anything.
    Again, thanks!

    Hey!

Great, I’m going to break down your questions below, and change the order according to what should be done first:

And then, can I have new posts go two places? Just by categorizing them differently?

Yes! So, all post will show up on your main page. You can put that wherever you want on the site — first page, last page, or you could even hide it! Then you’ll create categories. For instance, if you wanted all your posts to go to your page, and all Jeanne’s posts to go to her page, you’d create a category called Will Gray’s Blog and one called Blog / Novel Ideas. Here’s how you create categories:

    Organize Posts with Categories

Then, you’d assign each of your posts to one of those categories. They will all go to the main blog page, but then individually appear on their category page.

Finally (and here’s where things get a little tricky!), you will want to customize your menu. The menu is set up to show pages, but you are going to want it to show category tabs in some cases.

Here is information on setting up your menu:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

I can certainly help with the menu, if you get flummoxed :)

So how do I move the sidebar widget for Jeanne to her page “BLOG /NOVEL IDEAS”?

What you’ll do is adjust the visibility of Jeanne’s sidebar widget. Here are the instructions for making changes to those settings:

    Widgets

The reason I think you should do this last is that you’ll want to make sure you’ve got Jeanne’s category set up properly before you assign widgets to it.

Also: Do you think the front page works? You really have to scroll down to see anything.

I do think it works great. Here’s why:

    A) Great photo, but simple layout. It’s not too busy, and it’s very clear that people should scroll down the page.

    B) I think it’s an accepted website-viewing flow to scroll downward. I never think, “Where’s all the text? This is a pain to view!” Without even thinking about it, website viewers just innately know to scroll these days.
