    Hello, I just received the following instructions to fix my issue:

    Log in to your WordPress.com account and go to your site’s dashboard.
    Navigate to Settings → Security.
    Scroll down to the ‘WordPress.com Log In’ section.
    Switch off the toggle labeled ‘Allow users to log in to this site using WordPress.com accounts.’

    However, if I go to ‘Settings’, there is no option for ‘Security’. Please help!

    WP.com: Yes
    Jetpack: No
    Correct account: Yes

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    I found the related Help article for Security. That particular functionality is only available for sites using either a Creator or Entrepreneur plan.

    Oh no… My original problem is very stressful, and I was told by the AI this is the one fix :(

    This is my original issue:

    I am a teacher and using WordPress for my courses for much over a decade.

    Last fall, it seems like you have changed the login procedure for people who reply. My students have created nicknames, but often instead of their nickname a part of their email address is being publicly displayed, which rises privacy concerns, as my school is identifiable.

    I thought that Safari browser is part of the issue and that they log in through email rather than WordPress, and being careful would fix it, but I have every week students with this issue. It is exhausting!

    What are they doing wrong here? How can it be avoided?

    However, I have just a normal account, so there is no “Security” section!

    Users may read a blog without having an account, however, if they comment on a post, the system will automatically create a WordPress account for them.

    Similar to other social websites such as Facebook or Reddit, an account is required to comment.

    You can direct your students to change their “Public display name” to something other than their email address. They can access their profile settings through: https://wordpress.com/me/

    I forgot to mention, that you can also change your Forum display name using the function “Username” at https://wordpress.com/me/account

    Hi there, when did you first notice this issue occurring? Has it been some time now or very recently? Can you point out a place on your site where I can see this issue firsthand so we can take a closer look?

    Thank you for your replies!

    The problem started around September 2023, when WordPress offered new options to reply to a post: WordPress, Facebook and Email.

    It has affected all of my blog sites for students, but the one I am using this trimester is: knmediastudies.wordpress.com

    When the students login, instead of their nickname, even they signed up with WordPress, displays a part of their email address instead of the nickname. I know how to fix this one by one, but with 90 to 140 students each trimester, it can be pretty exhausting in the first two weeks, if 20-30% encounter this issue. On the other hand, 70% don’t. Most who saw me for help came with a Macintosh.

    I wonder if there is a fix under Settings –> Discussions? Like how about to uncheck “Comment author must fill out name and email”? But I am afraid it makes things worse…?

    The comments I saw there did not contain any email addresses that I could see. Did you edit these? Do you have any un-edited examples on your site that we can see so we can take a closer look? If you can share a link to the page where these are displayed, as well as a few hints as to what we should be looking for, it will be a great help. Thanks!

    Indeed I did fix many of these one by one already, Please have a look at the following entry, if you scroll down you will see “tur91384“, “tup21989“, “tur19674” etc. These are the ones display part of the email as default.

    Spring 2024 – Week 2 – Topic #2: Body Language

    According to the AI of WP, this problem seems to be somewhat known, but the fix they offered is not possible without a creative account. My blog is just for teaching my students, so no business, and it would be too expensive to change to such an account.

    There must be some way this can be done, I hope.

    Thanks for clarifying. As a test I tried to leave a comment, and for me the process worked as expected. I’ve deleted the comment (you may see the notification) but it helped to rule out an issue with the form itself.

    After digging in a bit deeper, I noticed that the examples you gave were all folks that have created WordPress.com accounts with us. Although the blog settings allow anonymous comments I noted a few folks seem to have chosen the option to comment with their WordPress.com accounts, and the username for the accounts is what you see in the comments.

    Essentially, when they created their accounts, the username for the account was set using the first part of their email address. I suspect that this is because they may not have entered a name of their own, so our system “fills in” a username based of the info we do have, primarily the email address.

    The good news is that students can rectify this by accessing their WordPress.com accounts, and updating their username to be anything other than what it got set to when they signed up. You can share this link so that everyone knows how to update: https://wordpress.com/support/change-your-username/

    Once students have updated their usernames, you will no longer need to edit them on your end.
