Settings > Import and Export
-
Hi. I wanted to clone an existing wordpress.com site that I have, so I went to Settings on the existing site and finished Export (Export content from your site. Your own data.) then went to the newly created site and Settings > Import (Import content from another WordPress or Medium site)
When it’s done importing (I was notified) and I found that some images are missing on the new site. Went to WP Admin > Media > Library on both sites, and the new one has 33.2 MB out of 3.0 GB where as the original has 40.7MB. Not sure why that is as all the images were in the Media Library. Can anyone explain and can this be fixed or do I have to add the images manually myself?
Thanks.

Hi @adrieeeen, are both sites hosted here with us? We sometimes see that when moving a site from WordPress.org, and we have a means to pull in the missing images.
If you are only missing a few images though it may be easier to just add those. Do you know how many are gone?
Also if both sites are here, can you send a link to each?

Thanks for the reply, supernova.
Both sites are .wordpress.com. I didn’t count the images that are missing, the sites are made up of mainly images, so, there are quite a few of them. So far, I only know the difference by looking at the space usage difference of 40.7MB to 33.2 MB. I just wanted to see if this is a known issue with the Import and Export functions, what’s causing it and if there’s a quick way to fix this. I have made 2 sites the same in every way (theme, font, color, etc) but just the images are missing.
The sites are for certain audiences only and I’d like to keep them private if that’s ok. Thanks again.

Hi there, hope you don’t mind me jumping in here.
When looking in your WP Admin dashboard Media Library for each site, are the number of images the same in each? You can see this (XXX items) at the top right of the Media Library columns.
Add /wp-admin/upload.php to your sites’ addresses to get to the WP Admin dashboard’s Media Library.

One more thing, if you see thumbnails in the WP Admin Media Library, toggle to List View. (temp screenshot)

Hi! The numbers of images on 2 sites didn’t match. I gave up on it and just added the images manually. Thanks so much for the tips though!!

Glad you’ve got it, @adrieeeen. Be sure to update the posts that reference those images, too. If you need help finding them, let me know the names of the images you uploaded.

@adrieeeen @supernovia – FWIW from my own experience, it’s the “unattached” images that may have an issue when exporting. Cheers.

Unattached images are images that have been uploaded into your Media library but have not been embedded into a post or page or used as a header image.
