Severe header quality reduction
-
The header quality on my blog has been severely reduced after upload, compared to the original file.
Originally, my header image was formatted as a .PNG, 1649×659 at 150 px/inch. I am aware that the maximum header size for my blog is 1000×288, so I did know that I would need to crop it. However, the header after cropping is formatted as a .JPG, 1000×288, at 72 px/inch.That is a reduction of more than half in image quality.
Is that huge reduction related solely to the fact that it needs to be cropped? If I created such a high quality image at 1000×288, thereby eliminating the need for a crop, would it preserve some of the quality, or would WP reduce quality upon upload anyway?
Any advice/suggestions/help is a appreciated.

Prepare the header to the exact size in a dedicated image editing program on your computer before uploading it so that you have complete control. When your header was resized and cropped by WordPress, it was then saved as a JPG, not as a PNG.

And the 150DPI? It means nothing on the internet. DPI only means something for print media. Everything on the internet is 72DPI because the entire internet ignores that DPI data in the image metadata.

Thanks sacredpath – I just uploaded a new one that was exactly 1000×288, and the quality is so much better than the ones that I had uploaded. Thanks for your help.
