Shaped Background Around Text Blocks

Hi everyone,
So, I’m new to this. I have a stripped background but now I would like to add a solid background block just around the text areas. I would like for the solid block to either have rounded corners, or square corners with a thin border that sits just outside the block background area.
Help on either would be great.Thanks

The background doesn’t show yet because I’m still editing things and previewing them. It;s just the standard Coraline theme right now.

Are you experienced with CSS editing and have you purchased the annually CSS editing upgrade? I’m asking because without it this may not turn out the way you may think it will. You can try before you buy here> Appearance > Edit CSS
It will allow you to stylize the appearance of themes you find here > Appearance > Themes, but it does not allow you to change the functionality, by editing the underlying template. It does not allow you to remove footer links to the theme designer or to wordpress.com. Also note that CSS is theme specific, so you cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes with the themes here at wordpress.COM.
Since there is no official Staff support for the CSS upgrade, and precious little Volunteer support, I recommend that you don’t buy the upgrade unless you have at least moderate understanding of HTML and CSS because you must be prepared to do the work on your own.
