Share Button Count Wrong

  • Unknown's avatar

This post had 99 Facebook shares/likes and in one day it went from 99 to 10. We doubt heavily that we lost 89 shares/likes in one day, so we assume that when we reached 100, the counter gets it wrong, thus displaying only a portion of the real number, i.e. 10.

A Thousand Years As One Day

Is this a bug or did we really lose 89 shares/likes in one day? Seems rather impossible, unless there were a mass conspiracy that took place without our knowledge, all 89 people got together and mass disliked/unshared our content at one time.

Could an admin/mod please check to see if there is a bug? Would like to see this fixed if possible. Thanks!

If it helps. We noticed this after the dorce redirect to ssl occurred.

    Hi there!

You are correct that the forced redirect to SSL is the cause of the issue. So here’s why you’re seeing “10” as the Facebook share count on that article right now. You can see how many shares of a URL are reported here:

    https://developers.facebook.com/docs/plugins/share-button/

The HTTP version is showing 5 shares
The HTTPS version is also showing 5 shares

We’ve taken the steps to make sure both are added together, and that’s why your sharing button currently shows 10.

The shares above those 10 that are missing are from the many forms of shortlinks, that do indeed point to the article, but because they now point to an HTTPS version don’t get retrieved as shares appropriately.

It’s something we’re seeing all across of WordPress.com, so it’s a high priority to fix. We’re just still coming up with the best solution.
