Share button counters set to zero after upgrade to own domain

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi

    1. I recently upgraded my blog to have my own domain – http://www.amayzmom.com.
I notice that the share button counters (facebook etc) are all set to zero under each post. How I can I restore my original share counts?

    2. I am using craft theme and the only option to have share buttons is on the bottom of each post. Is it limited to the theme? Is there a way to have the sharing buttons placed somewhere else?

    Thanks

    Hi there,

    1. The counts on the official share buttons display the number of shares in real-time on your blog, as reported by the specific service. Many of these services (such as Facebook) rely on your site’s address to keep track of these counts, so switching to a custom domain can reset the counts. Because the numbers come from each service itself rather than WordPress.com, we can’t control what number the sharing buttons display.

    2. You can control where your sharing buttons are shown on your blog under Settings > Sharing in your dashboard. We have more information about these settings here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/sharing/#customizing-sharing-settings

If you have any questions about this, please let me know!

    hi

I don’t think the sharing buttons are working at all now. The counters still show zero even after changing the domain they were shared on facebook etc.

And there is only one pre set option in the settings page for sharing button. Which by default shows them under each post. There is no option for anything else. The support page you have referred to says exactly this, that the sharing buttons can only go “below” each post and there is no option to put them on the left or all buttons vertically for example.

    Can you help ?

It may not be possible to restore the old counts on your sharing buttons, but when people use those sharing buttons from here on out they should track all of the new shares.

Sorry, I misunderstood what you were trying to do! The sharing settings let you choose where on your blog the sharing buttons are displayed in terms of whether they appear on your posts, your pages, your front page, etc. However, the theme determines where on each of those posts/pages the sharing buttons are placed.

    Hi

So people are now using sharing buttons to share the posts from the new url (with own domain). But still the counters are showing zero. Can you check why that is?

I double-checked your sharing settings (under Settings > Sharing in your dashboard), and I see that you are currently using Icons + Text for your sharing button style. To display the share count for these services, you can use the official sharing buttons for those services. You can change this by setting “Button style” to “Official buttons.” We have more information about this here:

    Add Social Share Buttons

Sorry, but I don’t think that is the problem !
Even earlier I had icons + text setting and still the numbers would show on each button. I suspect that the social media sites (facebook etc) are still pointing to the old url and hence the count is not getting registered with you.
Is that possible? Can you check?

Sorry about that! Not all of the sharing buttons show counts when they are Icons + Text, but Facebook does.

One thing to note, however, is that the number on the sharing button will only be increased if someone clicks on the button to share the post. If someone shares your post on Facebook without using the sharing button, the count won’t go up.

If you have links to places (that are publicly visible) where your posts have been shared since you registered your new domain, I’d be happy to take a closer look to see what might be going on there.
