Share buttons don't accumulate a count

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I’ve noticed that on my last two posts the share buttons don’t actually show a count of the number of shares or likes.

Both posts have done well in terms of shares and likes on Facebook (twitter not so much) but the number of likes (count) are not showing next to the share buttons on the blog.

Can you shed some light on this.

    Thank you.

    Francois

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Francois,

Could you point me to a specific post and provide some expected numbers? For example, on this post, I’m seeing 52 Facebook Likes:

    Hi Jeremy,

Looking at my last post ‘Teach Them About Charlie Around Your Kitchen Table (http://littleredshoes.me/2015/01/12/charlie-hebdo-terror-attack-paris-demonstrations/) it has been viewed 44 times. Most of the traffic is direct from Facebook. Where I have shared it personally it’s been liked 10 times and shared three times. And looking at previous ‘like’ averages I would’ve expected to see at least 20 – 15 likes.

I also share all my posts on twitter and not even the single count of my own share shows up next to the button. This has always been the case, which leads me to think that there may be something at the back-end that is not working as it should.

    Thank you for your help.

Thanks for clarifying! It looks like that individual post you mention has only attained one actual Like on the post. You can view this through a third party here:

    https://www.sharedcount.com/#url=http%3A%2F%2Flittleredshoes.me%2F2015%2F01%2F12%2Fcharlie-hebdo-terror-attack-paris-demonstrations%2F

You can also compare this directly with Facebook’s numbers here:

    https://graph.facebook.com/?id=http://littleredshoes.me/2015/01/12/charlie-hebdo-terror-attack-paris-demonstrations/

Can you try sharing the post directly by clicking the button to see if this makes a different? For example, when I share the post to a testing account, I see a count:

The reality shows a different picture. The last post was shared on Facebook on his wall and it clearly shows 5 likes. I shared it on my wall and it shows two likes. So, really at the very least the count should indicate 7 likes minimum and it doesn’t.

The post (http://littleredshoes.me/2015/01/07/a-year-of-less-and-a-year-of-more/) has also been shared on my wall and it shows 5 likes on Facebook, but not on wp.

I think there is more to this than the solution you have suggested.

Thank you for your help so far.

I gave this another try with your post “A Year of Less and a Year of More.” You can see the result in this screencast:

    http://d.pr/v/17CMj

When I click “Like” on the post, the value beside the icon increases to two. Additionally, the number Facebook reports is also increased to two. That number can be seen here:

    https://graph.facebook.com/?id=http://littleredshoes.me/2015/01/07/a-year-of-less-and-a-year-of-more/

To be clear, when you press “Like” on one of your posts, the value stays at the original number. Is that correct?

It looks like I’m seeing some different behavior for a Facebook personal profile vs. a page. I’m digging around to get to the bottom of this, and I’ll let you know when I have it figured out!

    That’s is right.

I don’t know if this is related, however, on my dashboard (classic dashboard stats page), on the bottom op the page there is a section showing ‘Totals, Followers & Shares’. Clicking on the ‘Shares’ tab, the count is 45.

I take it this is the number of times a post of littleredshoes has been shared since it was created…. However, I’ve shared each post on the blog, 85 in total, at least once… So that number (45) is also not correct.

Any way, thanks for your help. I hope we get to the bottom of this.

Hmm…I still can’t reproduce this. Can you try digging back through your posts to a post without any sharing numbers currently and try it on that one?

I don’t think this is a related issue. Those numbers may not match the Sharing buttons or stats provided by the Sharing Services themselves, because we can only count shares that happen on WordPress.com. We don’t count shares from ‘official’ buttons, just the standard share links.

    Good morning,

I’ve shared the following article: http://littleredshoes.me/2014/09/15/gay-parenting-its-not-unnatural-after-all/ both on Facebook and Twitter. It shows 0 counts for the Twitter share and 1 count for Facebook (at the time of sharing.

    Thank you.

Hi, just checking in with an update. Facebook share of the above article on my own FB wall shows 6 likes and 1 share… Shared on a friends wall it received 2 likes. Total of facebook likes indicated next to WP share buttons: 5. Should it not be 8 (6 + 2)?

Twitter share only once. Total indicated next to WP share buttons: 0.

    Hi!

We’re still looking into some issues regarding the Facebook buttons. However, the Twitter button seems to be working as expected. Here’s a screencast of me sharing one of your posts:

    http://d.pr/v/1jX95

The Facebook share count for the post you mention is still counting as 5 as shown here:

    https://www.sharedcount.com/#url=http%3A%2F%2Flittleredshoes.me%2F2014%2F09%2F15%2Fgay-parenting-its-not-unnatural-after-all%2F

That’s a third-party service that tallies shares from multiple sharing services. I’m not sure as of right now what is causing the discrepancy, but we’re looking into it!
