Share nnumbers disappear after update to post
-
I recently moved my site from wordpress.com to a self-hosted site (the old site was also janetwertman.com, now its shell is janetwertman.wordpress.com). I was able (with help, thank you!) to get the old shares to move as well so I didn’t lose those. But now if I update the post (for example, to add an SEO keyword) those sharing indicators fall back to zero. So now some of my old posts show neither likes (which never could come over) nor shares. Is there any way to get the shares back?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Likes cannot be transferred. When we need Staff help with issues Volunteers cannot resolve like this one we type modlook into the sidebar tags on our forum threads. I did that for you. How do I get a Moderator/Staff reply for my question? https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question Then we subscribe to this thread so we are notified when they respond. To subscribe look in the sidebar of this thread, find the subscribe to topics link and click it.

No, this is not about the likes – I should not have mentioned them except that now my posts look REALLY bare.
This is about the little number that appears on the Facebook share button to show how many times it has been shared. That is what disappears after I update a post

If you change the URL for the post, Facebook (etc) won’t have any record of that new URL being shared, so it will reset to zero.

There are several! Here’s one though (yes, it shows a few shares – but that is from recent days):
-
OK. I checked on this site: https://www.sharedcount.com/
This URL:
https://janetwertman.com/2015/07/23/july-23-1536-death-of-henry-fitzroy/
has a total of 14 shares. We can only display the numbers we’re given by various APIs.I did notice though that this:
https://janetwertman.wordpress.com/2015/07/23/july-23-1536-death-of-henry-fitzroy/
has 45 total shares, for what it’s worth. If those are the missing shares, at least you know why they are missing. You’re quickly catching up though :) -
But the janetwertman.wordpress.com was always janetwertman.com – it only reverted to the wordpress account after I transferred the janetwertman domain name to the new self-hosted website!
I also notice that the post I re-shared today did not start over at zero – is there something I did wrong on the others or some trick I should know about?
-
No tricks, on our end sorry! We are only reporting back what the APIs are telling us.
You’re welcome to check against https://www.sharedcount.com/ — those are the numbers we’ll show.
-
I’m not accusing you of tricks, I’m asking if there is some specific order in which I should be doing things so this doesn’t happen. If the original link is the same before and after the change, why do the numbers disappear?
-
Nothing I’m aware of. :( If you’re using a special plugin to help manage social things, you could try checking in with the plugin author.
We can only use what numbers we are given. We access the same numbers that sharedcount.com uses, so if you see a discrepancy between what is reported there, and what we are reporting, let us know and we can investigate that.
