sharing button count inaccurate

  • Unknown's avatar

On a recent post, the sharing button lists over 240 shares, but the number of visitors is only slightly more than that (274). If there really were 240 shares on facebook would there not be a visitor count several times higher than that? It doesn’t make sense that 240/274 visitors would have shared on facebook. This number must be inflated. Is the button broken? How can I tell if the number of views is wrong or if it is the number of shares that is miscounted? I thought maybe the share button was counting every click as a share, but I tested this out and when I clicked and did not share, the count did not increase.

    Hi there,

brookewritesme.com is a wordpress.ORG software install on paid hosting, hosted by CyrusOne
    Name Servers:
    ns2.bluehost.com
    ns1.bluehost.com

That site is not on our WordPress.COM servers. We do not provide support for local installs of WordPress.ORG software, or for WordPress.ORG software installs on paid hosting, linked to WordPress.COM accounts with the Jetpack plugin so they display on the My Sites WordPress.COM account page.

WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

The wordpress.ORG support forum is at http://wordpress.org/support. The wordpress.ORG login link is here https://login.wordpress.org/ If you do not have an account yet then click Create an account https://login.wordpress.org/register/ and if you have lost an account password click Lost password? https://login.wordpress.org/lostpassword/
WordPress.org support docs are at https://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page

Some Jetpack solutions are here http://jetpack.com/support/
Others are in the Jetpack support forum at WordPress.org
    http://wordpress.org/support/plugin/jetpack
However, if help cannot be found at either one then they can file a Jetpack support ticket here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/?jetpack=needs-service

  • Hi there,

The share count comes from Facebook, and has nothing to do with actual views on your site or how many times the button has been clicked. When your post loads in your browser we (or Jetpack in this case) send a request to Facebook asking how many times the link has been shared. Facebook checks, and returns us a number.

This number does not just show how many people have clicked the sharing button on your site, but it includes how many times a link has been re-shared on Facebook itself. That does not necessarily mean the people doing the sharing have actually clicked on the link and read your post.
