sharing buttons just sometimes.
-
Theme is Twenty Twelve with CSS.
I’m taking my first dip into sharing (haven’t used social media before). Trying to read your many fine docs on the subject – but still am a little in the dark.
1. What is the “right” way to always show the sharing buttons (but have the ability to override on individual posts and pages.
2. Is there a means to position these buttons in places other than the bottom. (Early on, I had [foolishly perhaps] unticked all my posts and pages- am now am trying to understand the philosophy behind it all.)
3. I can’t get my around what “ping” is. Can you help – with an explanation or a reference to an article. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

1. What is the “right” way to always show the sharing buttons (but have the ability to override on individual posts and pages.
You can set where sharing buttons are shown at Settings > Sharing and then you can turn them off on a page by page and post by post basis within the page or post editor in the “Sharing” module. If the sharing module does not show down below the text area in the editors, click on Screen Options at upper right and activate it. If you haven’t seen it, see our support page on Sharing for more information.

This depends a little on where you are wanting to move the sharing buttons. Generally they are at the bottom of posts and pages so that after a visitor reads your post or page, they can share it if they so desire.
It is fairly easy in the theme you are using to move the sharing buttons to the top of the post or page content, but on responsive width themes such as Twenty Twelve, moving them to a different location, and maintaining the responsive nature of things, can be difficult.
3. I can’t get my around what “ping” is. Can you help – with an explanation or a reference to an article.
Are you talking about when you publish a post or page we “ping” the search engines and services so that they know you have new content? Or are you talking about when you mention another blog and give a link to that site in your posts or pages that WordPress tries to notify (pingback) that blog that you have mentioned them?
