Shop on Personal or Premium Plan
-
I’m completely new to WordPress and currently have a photography website hosted and set up on Wix.com.
I am confused by the various options on WordPress and don’t know what kind of plan I need. I do need to have a shop on my website, but presumably I don’t have to pay £36 for an eCommerce plan.
Would a personal or premium plan suit me best and can I add a shop to this? I have stripe and paypal already set up for payments. I also assume I can build the website on WordPress to the point it is ready to go live then point the nameservers to the new site so that my current one stays live for now?
TIA

Hi @jamesloveridgehotmailcouk,
can I add a shop to this?
You would in fact need the full E-Commerce plan to have a shop, but if you don’t don’t need full shopping cart functionality, Simple Payments would work. And that’s an option available in Premium. We have more information here:

Correct.

Thanks for getting back to me. What do you mean by full shopping cart functionality?
I would be selling items like canvases and calendars and need all the functions that my current website has on Wix, including the different size options for the same product – http://www.jamesloveridgephotography.co.uk.

Hi jamesloveridgehotmailcouk,
What do you mean by full shopping cart functionality?
With a shopping cart, multiple products can be added to the cart and purchased at the same time. Using a plugin like WooCommerce would give you a cart, the option to add variations for a single product (e.g. size) and a choice of payment gateways (not just PayPal).
It would still be possible to sell your products using Simple Payments though. There is no add to cart button, just payment buttons — visitors will be taken straight through to the checkout when they click on those. Variations aren’t supported, so you would need to create an individual product for each one (rather than one product with multiple size options).

Thanks Gemma, so I need WooCommerce but the only way to use that is to have the eCommerce plan at £36 a month?

To use an ecommerce plugin like WooCommerce you’d need to be on at least our Business Plan, which is £240 a year, or you can go with our eCommerce plan which comes with WooCommerce and a number or add-ons pre-installed at £432 a year.
All plans on WordPress.com are billed yearly.

Thanks to everyone that has replied.
That seems fairly extortionate for small businesses and sole traders. Think I’ll have to stick with Wix at a third of the price…

My apologies, I’d meant Business plan rather than e-commerce. But thank you for the feedback.
If you’re only selling a few items and don’t need a full-blown cart, the Premium plan may well be your best bet.
