Hi, I am being asked to do a wordpress site and there is some shopping and donations aspects included. I don’t see a plugin for shopping cart (events and donations, it is a college with seminars to promote site). Is there one, and do you recommend either the premium or business monthly paid services to get all these features, or can I do them with the free version? thanks much!!!

Unfortunately, for the time being, it appears that e-commerce options on WordPress are not available; while users had the option in the past, there were some issues with some of the plug-ins, and WordPress took them down as to continue working on them so that they will be up to their impeccable standards. =)
Per a WordPress.com staff member at this thread, this will likely not be a permanent issue, but there is no current time-table for when e-commerce options will become available.
Just in case, here is a link that details the differences between plans. Unfortunately, for the time being, none of them allow for e-commerce. I hope that answers your question!

thank you, perfect information, even though it is not what i had hoped to learn! Something to look forward to…I guess I can still link out to paypal or something similar though, true?

According to this help document, if you have a PayPal account, you can sell individual items through that service and link it to your WordPress.com blog.
Step One: You have to get a Paypal button code first–click here for directions to use this service. This can be added to a post, a page, or a side-bar.
Step Two: Follow the directions at this help guide (this will take you to step two), and you’ll be able to use this service.
