Short URL gone from Twitter share function?
-
First off, apologies of this is the wrong forum.
I don’t know if this is just me but suddenly last night, after four years of using WordPress, when I use the Twitter share button on my blog instead of the short url the full page urlL is displayed.
Since I often add hashtags, referrals and other information to share this is a bit of a nuisance with the Twitter 140 character limit. it means I have to go back into the editor to get the shortlink before doing what was originally automatic.
Has anyone else had this? Why was it changed and can we have the short url back please?
Thanks in advance.

Because Twitter automatically uses a link shortening service of its own for tweeted URLs, we have removed link shortening from the WordPress.com sharing buttons.

Thanks for the reply.
However while Twitter reduces a URL to 23 characters, WPs shortlink is a more manageable 16 (which does make all the difference in a Tweet sometimes). Just seems like robbing Peter to pay Paul to me. :-
Anyway, appreciate the explanation. :-)

I totally understand the thinking behind that. However, the issue is that, it doesn’t actually matter if the WP.me link is slightly shorter, Twitter sets URL length to 23 characters no matter what:
A URL of any length will be altered to 23 characters, even if the link itself is less than 23 characters long. Your character count will reflect this.

Sure! But, you should know how it works around here, we WordPresss users don’t like change! ;-) :-P
