Shortening the number of posts on the main page?

  I would like to know how the minimize the number of posts showing on the main page of my blog, right now you scroll down endlessly through 10 posts. I would like to use some footer widgets, however i am certain readers will grow weary before they ever get to the footer area. I would like to have the last 3 or so posts on the front page. I feel the answer is staring me right in the face, but just cannot seem to figure it out. Thanks for any help you can give.

  On your dashboard under settings then reading.
