Shortlink versus Permalink!
-
I like the idea of the short code [archives] as I use this on a basic index page list of my posts. It shows the title of each post but the underlying link to the post is the ‘permalink’ which is a useless feature throughout anywhere on a blog. What would be better is to consistently use the WordPress ‘shortlink’ i.e. http://wp.me/P28nLD-1Bi.
This shortlink is the ‘true’ permalink that refers to the actual page, post, attachment, image, etc that should never change. The ‘permalink’ is way to long to refer to or send in an email and I find that sometimes I need to change the title of one of my posts which meant that if a reader has bookmarked it, it is then redundant. The shortlink is the best solution to use everywhere. In the interim, can the shortcode tag ‘[archives]‘ be changed so the page of all the posts displays the title with the underlying URL being the wordpress short link or include a switch to the short code so it does, that way it doesn’t upset the applecart for existing blogs where the default URL is the useless ‘permalink’.

Sorry – bad idea to trash the useless permalinks – I like the useless Permalink in the Archive address – I copy those address links all the time and paste them into email – since I can read the useless links when I explain in the email what each post is about – with some obscure short link code it would be much harder to keep things straight

Ah! Hence the reason I suggested the additional switch to be included whereby the default remains the permalink and you add the additional new switch to have the WP shortcode if you want it. Caters for everyone then doesn’t it! – Gotta be flexible!

And the permalink has waaaaay more SEO for your blog than the shortlink, which does not include your domain.

You add some better ideas to extend this concept then…If you added the same shortlink to the main blog site it could have a dual purpose to extend its useability further, the wp short code should have the ability as an extension to the site page! ie http://blogsitename.wordpress.com/wp.abcde. as well as being able to be used entirely on its own. Remember of course that the general concept I started with was a more permanent way to ‘link’ to a page or item. In the concept of its use in conjunction with the ‘[archives]‘ short code on a page, having a list of all the titles with the underlying URL being the short link is much more efficient. Bear in mind that you can change the title header of your post at any time but it does not change the long winded ‘permalink which may not even resemble the title anymore (just to confuse everything). If you do change the permalink, anyone who book-marked it is screwed. It only takes one!
