Shortname for emoji-keyboard-less users?
-
News of additional emoji is exciting, but for those using an OS (ie old versions of Windows or Ubuntu) without an emoji keyboard (for now at least), is there any plans of enabling the use of emoji’s shortname on WordPress? (Just like it is already the case for some of the WordPress smilies)

Hi there,
If you’re on an older version of Windows or another operating system, you can copy/paste emoji from GetEmoji.com (as mentioned on our Smilies page) or from this cheat sheet. There aren’t currently plans to add shortnames to use those Emojis on WordPress.com.

Hi rachelmcr. It’s good that emoji have their own letters so they don’t conflict with ‘normal’ ones. But it turns out that the U+263A character “☺” (the white smiling face) is now an emoji code—please check here (first pic, the one on the right):

(on the other two ‘doors’, I deliberately use ‘the black smiling faces’ so that the three doors will be—supposedly, of the same sizes)The “☺” is a single character (not a sequence of letters), so I wonder if there is a way to turn off an emoji individually, since I guess most of the time we would like what we type shows up ‘as is’, in looks as well as in sizes. Thanks.

@rachelmcr Thanks for the reply.
Although it’s possible to copy/paste the emojis, I find that it’d be faster for me to type out the shortnames rather than switching pages just to copy an emoji, but ah well, I must be an odd user case ;)

@kutukamus — Thanks for pointing that out. I’m checking with our developers to find out more about that character for you.
@guaiava — I’ll certainly suggest that to our team as a future feature for emojis, so they can consider adding shortname support down the road. :)
