Should I avoid using the same word as a category and a tag?
-
Is it wrong to use the same word as a category and a tag? In looking over older posts, I see that I have used the same word or phrase as a tag and a category. For example, I had originally tagged a name within my post (Carl Sandburg). Later, I created a Menu that sorts my posts by authors mentioned; therefore, I had to add Carl Sandburg as a category as well. Should I remove “Carl Sandburg” as a tag, if I’m now using it as a category?

Hi! Let’s dig into this. Does your My Sites page not show all three of your sites?

Sorry! As you might have guessed, I posted that in the wrong thread. :D
Here is WordPress.com’s Categories vs Tags comparison –
As you can see, it’s perfectly fine to use both a categories and tags. :)

It’s not wrong, but WPcom treats tags and categories the same when it comes to the Reader. On your site, however, the story is different.
Think of Categories as a broad index and Tags as a finer drill down of your content. So “Authors” would be a Category and “Carl Sandburg” would be a Tag. “Poetry” could be a Category and “Japanese” could be a sub-category (you can have them), and “Haiku” could be a Tag.
Custom Menus level the playing field if you want to arrange things in a navigation bar or Custom Menu widget. http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

@lastnode I first saw your response in my email and was confused :)
@justjennifer Okay, thanks: so–there’s really no reason to use the same word as a tag and as a category. Thanks for the Custom Menu link; I should look at that more closely. The more I understand, the more I understand, if that’s not too redundant. I had added some Custom Menus to my site about a month ago, but I’m just starting to understand how they work.
