Should I be worried about a massive spike in views?

  Earlier today, my status showed a massive spike up to over 500 views, with only 62 visitors to my page. All of the views came to the same one page on the blog, making me wonder if someone was just stuck refreshing it forever? In the last ten minutes, my stats page shifted, but I’m still wary – since the change, the number of visitors is now 379, and the views were in the low 600’s. That’s since gone up to 673 views, with the number of visitors still stick at 379. My previous highest number of visitors was 20, number of views 39. Should I be worried? What’s going on?

  Hi there,

  That is a huge spike. It looks like they all came from Facebook. Was your post promoted there in some way that you can tell?

  If not, let me know. It might be some kind of bot crawler, I can ask our data team if there’s something we can do.

  Hi!

  Nobody’s said anything to me about sharing the post, and as far as I can tell there’s no way to tell for sure if someone’s shard something on facebook unless you happen to stumble across it, which I have not. I did find sharedcount.com, which when I gave it the address of the specific page with all the hits is telling me that the post has likes, comments, and shares. Maybe I just got lucky and somebody decided it was worth spreading around the internet?

  I just didn’t want to assume it was benign without checking first.

  It is odd that they didn’t tell you about it, though. If you continue to see continual abnormal stat spikes like this, let us know and we can dig in further, but it appears your post was just really popular. :)
