Should I get my own domain?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of purchasing your own domain thorugh wordpress and redirecting it to your wordpress blog? I am seriously about to consider it, however if it doesn’t provide a drastic change I am not sure if I should do it. Will it increase traffic? Make people take me more serious? Any feedback would be appreciated.

It’s easier for your readers to remember, and should you ever move to an independent host, all of the links to your new domain will go with you. If you don’t get a domain name and you move to an independent host, you can’t take whatever.wordpress.com with you; you have to start with a whole new URL. And yes, you look more professional with your own domain name.

I’ll add my two cents, although I may be trying to justify my laziness in staying her to preserve my PageRank and all the links I’ve accumulated. I wouldn’t consider moving to a new domain unless: (1) I had more than enough traffic to justify ads on the blog; or (2) unless there were some theme I just had to have that isn’t available here. Reason number one isn’t likely to happen, and I’d have be nuts to move only for reason number two.

Is my URL here difficult to memorize? Sure, but anyone who likes a blog will bookmark it, so that’s not an issue. Does my blog seem less “professional” with WordPress in the name? Maybe, but TimeCube.com has its own domain, so I don’t think that’s a decisive factor. I’ll probably stay here until they decide to toss me off.

    YourDomain.com/net looks better on a business card…
