Should I go self-hosted?
-
I’m considering switching from the free wordpress to a self hosted WP so that I can add javascript and ads to my blog. What would be the pros of doing this and how difficult is it?
I’m no website pro so I would need a step by step process to switch. I currently have a self hosted site through yahoo webhosting and thought I might be able to link it up with that?
I have a bunch of followers and don’t want to lose anyone once the switch is made. Help?!?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi!
Well, as you say, depending on how you do the self-hosting, the advantage is the freedom to do whatever you like with the WP site, unrestricted. Of course, you lose the automatic backup and resilience you get from WP.com; and you’d need the host (or yourself) to handle upgrades of WP itself, if that’s what you want.
There’s a support page here to look at:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/
From what I understand, you’d probably need something more than a simple web-hosting option. That would probably allow you to host your WP site, but give you no more access than you have now. You’d need to check with your host which version of WP they have installed, and whether they’d support plugins and so on, which is what I think you are after.
I think GoDaddy do specific WP hosting… and probably most of the 1000s of web-hosts you’ll find on the web.
Google on “moving from wordpress.com to wordpress.org” should give you loads of useful links, as it’s a popular thing to do, and wordpress.com will help with their “guided transfer”.
I view it as a balance between convenience with some restrictions; versus more freedom, but more effort (and potentially cost, depending on what you want to do).

My response is a plain and simple one. If you are not adept at WordPress.com blogging then the best course of action is to learn how to become Independent of support here on a free hosted blog.
For self-hosting figure an average monthly total cost (including cost of a domain name) of about $10 to $25 generally, but that all depends on storage and bandwidth requirements. You will be responsible for all upgrades, installations, backups and troubleshooting on a self hosted wordpress.org install. The kind of hand holding support you get here does not exist at wordpress.org. There one is expected to read the flipping manual (codex), search religiously before posting, and wait for ages for a response from Volunteers.

After you set up your wordpress.org install and install and activate the JetPack plugin you can provide both URLs to WordPress.com Staff and they can transfer your email subscribers only. Those who follow your blog in the WordPress.com Reader cannot be transfered.
