Should I load WordPress on my machine?

  I assumed management of an existing site. I make changes live-online. Should I have loaded WordPress on my machine to try out pages (experiment a little) without disrupting the functional site? Thanks.

  You’d also need to setup a webserver on your computer too for that.

  Instead, just add another free WordPress.com blog to your account by visiting https://signup.wordpress.com/signup/ while logged in. It’s easier, still free, and exactly like the main WordPress.com blog you’re working on. :)
