should i register a domain with wordpress?
-
Hi everyone,
I need some advice/help/support:
1. I currently have a blog which is still small through wordpress.com. Want to register a domain, but completely different url, but same topic. Should I register my domain through wordpress or godaddy. And i plan to go to wordpress.org
2. Once I register a domain, I believe i have to wait 60 days until i transfer it to a self-hosted wordpress.org?
3 what are my best options?
Keep blogging with my old url on wordpress.com after 60 days transfer everything to wp.org? -
1 If I were you, I’d register through WP.com. It’s cheap, and compared to GoDaddy the service is excellent.
2 I believe so, yes. Its always best to register the URL as soon as possible. If you use it at WP.com for a few weeks, oh well, no biggie. People who subscribe to Whatever.com via RSS will still get the feed if you move, as long as they subscribed to whatever.com/feed and not whatever.wordpress.com/feed.
3 Yes, that is your best option IF you are determined to move off WP.com.

Perfect thanks!
So then
1. I register a new url domain with wordpress.com,
2. purchase a host for my wordpress.org.I was reading http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/#update-name-servers
it said if I want to “Transfer to Another Registrar” i have to wait 60 days. Do you know if that counts as going from wp.com to wp.org?
Thanks again

Don’t bother getting hosting for the external website until the 60 days are up. Why bother?
And I’m not sure, but I think so. Let me do a forum search and check.

No need to Transfer the domain name – just point the name-servers to your new host once your new host is set up to catch the domain
-
PS – you can buy the domain name today and use if on an external host tomorrow if you wanted. The 60 day rule is only if you are transferring to a different registrar

raincoaster, could you explain why you say that? How is the service excellent? I’m not trying to pick at open wounds here, but I am interested to hear in other’s stories.

Thank you both.
I think i’m getting it now. The 60 day rule for transferring to a different registrar, for example from wp.com to godaddy.com registrar right?I apologize for being repetitive, still new at technology wording.

If you do a Google search and that’s where you will find opinions on GoDaddy web hosting. No need to Transfer the domain name – just point the name-servers to your new host once your new host is set up to catch the domain
As auxclass has said you can get a WordPress.org install, export your content out of your WordPress.com blog and into the install without changing the registrar. Changing registrars is NOT required. I haven’t changed mine and have no intention of doing so.

@kylejsimmons
I apologize for accidentally posting the URL to the blog linked to your username. The long and short of this is that this is a support forum. It’s not the place to discuss web hosting stories. Please use Google search. -
@timethief, no need to worry, once I get this cleared up that URL will be invalid anyway! I completely understand about support forums, sorry for the misdirection.
