Should I respond to all likes on my blog post?

Should I respond to all ‘likes’ on my blog post?

  • No.

Actually, it’s up to you, but my advice is not to. The unfortunate reality is that there’s such a thing as spam likers. They scroll through topics listings in the Reader and just click like on every post without reading anything (which is why you often get likes without a corresponding pageview on your site), in the hope that the blog owners will see the like, visit their blogs, and give them a pageview. It’s a rotten practice, in my opinion, and my response is to ignore them. People follow blogs the same way, so I also don’t click through on every follow I get.

The exception for me is if I see the same person likes several posts over time, which indicates they’re probably a regular reader. Then I’d visit their site to see what they write about, and follow if it interests me. But for the most part I don’t click through to blogs on either likes or follows, unless their blog name in the notification piques my interest. Normally, I’ll only visit someone’s blog if they leave a comment on mine, showing that they definitely actually read it. It’s not a rule, but it helps me strike a balance, otherwise I’d just spend all my time visiting blogs I don’t want to read because they showed up in my notifications.

Look at this guy: he has reportedly followed up to 2000 blogs per day. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/why-are-you-capping-the-amount-of-followers-we-can-have?replies=34#post-2321299 The same technique is used with Liking, only you don’t have to go to the trouble of unliking afterwards.

Because a like has so little engagement, I don’t bother following up on them. I rarely even follow up on Follows, because they too are spamfests. Comments, now, I ALWAYS reply to.
