Should I transfer my domain
-
Our website and domain are currently managed by a website company. However we would like to create a new website in house and want to use wordpress as our platform. In doing this, we would like to keep our domain name but the company ‘bought’ it, is it a good idea to transfer our domain or is mapping our domain a better option? I have not done this before and only started websites and domain ownership from scratch, is this an easy process? do you provide support?? Also we are a non-profit, do we need to create a business or personal wordpress account?

Hi there,
In doing this, we would like to keep our domain name but the company ‘bought’ it, is it a good idea to transfer our domain or is mapping our domain a better option?
This is really up to you, and what will be simpler for you. If you prefer to keep the domain at the current domain provider and just connect it here, you’ll go with mapping. In that case you’ll pay us for a plan for the site, and the domain provider for the domain’s annual domain renewal.
If you transfer the domain to us, you’ll have both in the same place, which is simpler from an admin perspective, as you’ll only pay us for both upgrades. However, note that we view the individual who owns the WordPress.com account as the owner of the domain. As you’re doing this for your organisation, it might be good to use a dedicated WordPress.com account for this rather than your personal one, i.e. have a separate account just for this one site. That way, should you leave, someone else can just take over the account to continue managing the site.
I have not done this before and only started websites and domain ownership from scratch, is this an easy process? do you provide support?
We have a detailed tutorial to help you get started at https://wordpress.com/learn/. We also have documentation on all our features at https://wordpress.com/support/, and all our paid plans come with live chat and email support included.
Also we are a non-profit, do we need to create a business or personal wordpress account?
This depends on what features you think you’ll need. If your main goal at this point is to connect your domain here, the Personal Plan will be enough. If you want the ability to install plugins or use your own theme, you’ll need Business.
If you’re not sure, start with Personal for now – you can always upgrade to a more expensive plan later if you find you need the features it includes.
