Should Images of a Domain-Mapped Site be Stored With the Host?

    Greetings,

I mapped my blog with a domain sometime ago (http://intercongreen.com). After I did this, I saw a dramatic, but expected, drop in search engine traffic. Even after a couple years, it has not completely rebounded.

I notice that I get less search engine image traffic than I used to, and I wonder if this is because when images are loaded and stored through wordpress.com, they are stored within the original wordpress.com domain of my blog (progressivetimes.wordpress.com) rather than the mapped domain.

My question is, does it make sense to begin storing my images on the Godaddy server and simply link back to them in my posts rather than uploading images directly through wordpress? Would search engines like this more rather than the disconnect between posts and image domains?

I didn’t know if anyone else had experience with something similar. Thanks in advance.

Hot linking images is rarely a good idea, especially for SEO. You want association with your site and the image links.

When you map a domain, there is sometimes a dip in traffic as search engines update to the new domain information. There are also seasonal decreases. For over a decade, I always detect a drop in traffic in August and September unless there is something spectacular going on that keeps them coming back for more.

Just give this some time. In three months or so, reevaluate then. I tend to look at SEO and traffic patterns big pictures rather than the macro view. It’s like stocks. The longer you hold them, the greater the odds they will do good things. :D
