Should religious bullies be allowed to destory wordpress?

  • Unknown's avatar

My blog, http://www.clarepeople.com/wordpress was hacked last week and mostly destroyed it would seem because someone didn’t like an image of Jesus holding a can of beer which was posted on it more then a years ago (https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/jesus-picture-with-beer-glass-and-cigarette-in-hand?replies=13#post-448359). I’m interested to knwo what the wordpress community think about this.

  • @clarepeople I don’t really know, but I think it’s more likely your blog was hacked because it’s still running WordPress 2.6.

You can read more about this particular hack here.

    Mr Andrew Seamus Hamilton,
After reading the two commends found on your website, I posted my own comments giving you the reasons that I felt are justified for removing the tarnished image of the Lord Jesus Christ posted on your website. I had mentioned about the communal riots, the destruction caused to the lives and properties by the clashes, and other consequences that occurred in many places in India as a result of some people using that image. (I shall e-mail to you separately a news feature I had written about it). My comments posted to you included an appeal and request to you to remove the image so that such adverse incidents could be avoided in the future in the communally sensitive places like India. It looks you have not read my comments. May be your website was hacked even before that. I am really sorry about. That was not my purpose of writing to you or to the WordPress.
The reason for my writing to the WordPress was that I found some sites hosted by the WordPress carrying this image when I looked for it in the Google image search. I cited http://www.clarepeople.com/wordpress/ only as an example when they replied to my letter to substantiate what I had written.
In your case as well as mine, some consequences have occurred which we originally did not intend at all nor even imagined would happen. We may have some lessons to learn from such events. I do appreciate the voluntary service you were doing through your website and feel sad that many hours of your hard labour was lost.
With best wishes for a better future,
    arthumma.

@clarepeople…While I understand your anger, and sympathize with your plight, I fail to recognize why you believe WordPress and its community should DO something about it. As Raincoaster has pointed out, your blog is not a member of the WordPress.COM community, meaning this one, HERE, where you’ve posted and where the first OP posted. The situation has nothing to do with us as a community.
On a personal level, I posted my opinion of the photo in the thread you’ve linked to. I still stand by that opinion. You’re going to run into religious zealots all over the internet who at some point, will use your content and the content of others as an excuse for their behavior. It’s unfortunate, but it’s life. Welcome to the internet. My suggestion would be to upgrade your security, learn from your own personal mistakes, and carry on.

First of all, Jesus drank wine every single day. I didn’t see the picture, but it is odd that people think that tarnishes the image of Christ.

Secondly–we shouldn’t allow any bullies on wordpress–religious ones or nonreligious.

It’s true that Christ drank wine but, the alcohol level was not like it is today. They had no knowledge of formatting it. The alcohol level back then was only 2 or 3% in volume. Not to stir up anything, in my view point, it is wrong to have such photos’.

But like supportbot said; “This support forum is for blogs hosted at Word Press.com. If your question is about a self-hosted Word Press blog then you’ll find help at the Word Press.org forums”.

This is the “Ideas” forum. Here is my idea:
In any thread where it is discovered that the OP is not referring to a free blog provided by and hosted by wordpress.com and has bee directed to the correct forum to post to at http://wordpress.org/support/ I would like to see Staff close the thread. .

Very good idea! It should be closed.

I agree this should be closed here as it has now been moved or reposted in OFF TOPIC.
