Should sub categories appear under parents?

  I’ve gone to the categories area and created a new sub category (A-B names) with the parent as Poems of Other Poets. In the one poem I’ve edited to put in that sub category, the listing of categories shows that hierarchy, But on my front page, the sub category is listed as just another category, equal to the parent.
  Is it supposed to show up instead as part of a drop down listing under the parent?

  Go to appearance > widgets, click on the right end of the categories widget title bar and select “show hierarchy” and then save.
