Should the MX record for external email be point to the site name or the old IP?
-
I’m moving the website of a non-profit to wordpress.com but wish to keep the email with the old provider. In the MX record DNS setting, should it be the IP address of the old site or the name of the current site?
In other words, should it be “MX 0 xx.xxx.xxx.xxx.” or “MX 0 belmontxxxxxxx.org.”?
Do I need any other entries for email or just the MX record?

Howdy,
I’m glad to hear it! :-)
In the MX record DNS setting, should it be the IP address of the old site or the name of the current site?
Can you contact your email host for the correct MX records, then reply to this forum thread with those? (Some hosts require a CNAME, but most don’t point to an IP address.)

Okay, so you can go to Store -> Domains, then Edit DNS for the mapped domain, then add that MX record in the format as you stated in your original post.
You can see more details about Custom DNS settings here:
Please note that it may take up to 72 hours for DNS changes to take effect everywhere.

I had two options listed in my original post: I presume you mean it should read “MX 0 belmontxxxxx.org.”?
