  please comment on the recent bug described here and should any of us who used wordpress.com do any manual fixes?

  That bug exists only on self-hosted WordPress sites. If you have one, then go ahead and update manually to 4.9.4
  There is nothing you can update on a WordPress.com site; everything is updated automatically.
