Show correct local time on widgets
-
I have an ‘Upcoming Events’ widget on this blog but the time given for the ‘upcoming events’ is not local time (MEL, Australia) but instead shows UTC / GMT.
How do I configure the widget to show the local time? Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Since the Upcoming Events widget has no such settings itself, and it depends upon your Google Calendar settings, the thing to do is change the settings in that account. The instructions are given at the Google Calendar Change Your Time Zone support page.

I can’t seem to get my time set correctly. I live in Michigan, and used the Detroit time zone selection, but it’s still off?

Thank you for your answers thus far.
The feed is coming off an iCal calendar of mine.
It’s off by 10 hours which is the southern hemisphere summertime difference between Melbourne and London. -
Hi there,
Did you both do as @musicdoc1 stated above? If you changed the time zone after you put the widget on your site, try removing the Upcoming Events widget and reading it. I just tried it and it worked on my site.
Let me know if you have any questions with this!

@gracejiyoung – I’ll try it tonight.
@musicdoc1 – Sorry, I don’t know how to access the code of the widget. Offsetting UTC certainly wasn’t one of the options when setting it up.
-
@gracejiyoung – my iCal supports multiple timezones and and it is activated, so I assume that that info is incorporated in some way in the iCal feed.
-
@gracejiyoung – I tried removing the widget , changing the iCal timezone and reinstalling the widget with the iCal feed again. It didn’t change anything unfortunately.
@musicdoc1 – do you mean that I should add a UTC offset number to the iCal feed?
-
Can you show me a screenshot of the timezone in your Google Calendar? Please upload that to your Media > Library and I’d be happy to take a further look. I just want to make sure you’re changing the same timezone as I was.

@gracejiyoung Hi! Thanks for taking the time out. I’ve done as asked but, as I mentioned earlier, it’s not a Google calendar feed, it’s an iCal Feed, from Apple. So, maybe that’s the problem. Perhaps I have to share that iCal onto a Google Calendar and use the the Google calendar feed to supply the widget.

No. Thought you were using code from Google Calendar.

Unfortunately, I haven’t tested this widget, so my comments have been rather speculative.
You’ve made a distinction between a Google Calendar feed and an iCal feed. However, the Upcoming Events support page suggests that the latter can be obtained from Google Calendar:
First, you will need to get an iCalendar link. Google Calendar is a free calendar application from Google you can use to create a calendar and get an iCalendar Feed URL.
Is there a difference between iCalendar and iCal? I’m presuming they are the same thing. The support page then provides the following five steps, some of them pictorially illustrated:
1. Access your Google Calendar and click on the little arrow next to your calendar name and select the settings link.
2. Click on the name of the calendar you want to embed (Tasks, in this example).
3. Click on the green ICAL button (next to Calendar Address).
4. Copy and paste the code that displays (it will begin with “http” and end with “.ics”).
5. Make sure your calendar is public in the “Share this Calendar” section or WordPress.com will not be able to see the calendar to embed it. -
Success!
Thank you so much musicdoc1 for taking the time to explain that. I really appreciate it.
I followed your clear instructions and it’s all working with the right times and everything.
I had already gone and made a new calendar in Google but I missed the step of clicking on the green ICAL button. Thanks again.
