show email anywhere on my blog?

  • Unknown's avatar

Is there a way for me to allow people to email me instead of posting at every post? Sorta like Blogger?

I don’t know how Blogger works, but you could create a text widget in your sidebar with your email address in. Bear in mind that the spam bots will have a field day when they discover you’ve got your email address there though.

That’s true..I didn’t think of that.. How about on my profile… ? Is there a place or checkbox I can toggle..?

    Thanks
    Jim

Unfortunately I don’t think there’s any options within the profileto allow showing of the email address. They are something that theme designers and developers tend to protect like gold due to the problems with robots and spambots farming email addresses. They would normally leave it up to the user to decide to show an email address.

Obviously, here at WP we can’t edit themes so I *think* the only option is going to be the text widget.

That and picking a theme that shows the sidebar on every page. Some don’t which would mean that the text widget wouldn’t show up.

You might also want to try making a Bookmarklet thingie but then you would have to remember to click on it every time you write a Post. That would be a pain.

I think your “about” page would also be a logical place for people to look for your email address, as well as, in a “contact information” text widget on the sidebar.

Agreed, but they mentioned “every post” :)

I can see where somebody would want to post it on every page that they could. It’s easier to find.

hmmm on every page it’s not overkill, it’s convenience for your readers – well, I’m surely taking that under advisement :)

I see that he is looking to add a an email to show on his blog. You can view mine and see how I did it.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yeah, but it’s broken. Unless that’s the way you wanted it? :)

I made a mistake in the WAY I asked my beginning question. I am sorry for that. On Blogger, I had a blog, but what I miss is the little “envelope” on the bottom of every post that basically allows you to do this…

    “Email Post to a Friend:”

which is a form that opens up..

That’s what I was talking about.. I am sorry for my misstatement.. This whole “Blogging” thing is VERY New to me.. LOL…

    Thanks
    Jim

    Not a problem. :)

The “email post to a friend” feature is not part of the basic WordPress code and actually requires a plugin to add it in there. Plugins are installed by the administrators on pretty much a case by case basis.

Thay are very easy to abuse and use to send out email spam though. Remember, Blogger has a number of issues that WordPress.com is trying their best to stay away from. The hacking and all that. I would think that adding in this feature would lead to it being taken advantage of.

Ditto with forms. Those are stripped out of any enduser input.

You are free to send in a feedback though and request it though. Matt and staff have stated that they keep track of requests like this.

It pretty much comes down to security vs. features though and for Matt and crew, security always wins.

    DrMike, thanks!

I guess it makes sense. I tried Blogger (or BlogSpot) and I didn’t like the way it looked compared to WordPress! Also, In the WordPress way everything seems much simpler to do with more “meaningful” features.. With Blogger, I think I was in the position where I had to start learning code.
For what it’s worth, here is my WordPress Blog…
    http://www.gatosblog.com
and here is my BlogSpot Site…
    http://jimgatos.blogspot.com

    See the difference?
    Just one more question…
Is there a way I can get emails everytime sommeone posts to my blog?
    Thanks
    Jim

    I LOVE TO BLOG!
    LOL

PS.. ONE MORE QUESTION.. Is it possible to put “buttons” on the right side of my blog, like a “Get Firefox” Button…?

    Thanks Again..

Yes, but they won’t work. JavaScripts are stipped out as well.

I think some time reading the FAQ might help you as these questions have been answered many times already. :)

    Good luck,
