Show excerpt in category archive

I’m using the Jungleland theme. When going to the category archive page it lists posts by title, author, and date posted. I want to be able to have an excerpt with a thumbnail on this page.
I’ve read a few forums like this:
http://wordpress.org/support/topic/show-full-post-from-categorybut since the code for content doesn’t exist it is not working. I have also tried adding the content or excerpt code but this gives me a parse error. What can I add and where in my .php so that I can see excerpts on my category and archive pages?
