Show full post instead of excerpts in archives? (Sandbox)

  Hello,

  I’m pretty well versed with CSS, and I have the upgrade, but I’m looking for some help.

  Is there a way to make the archives show full posts instead of summaries using CSS?

  It isn’t something that can be fixed via CSS, but there is a work around. What you have to do is for each post, switch to the HTML editor, copy everything there and the put that into the “excerpt” module in the post editor down below the text box. The categories and archives pages will then show the full post.

  In the majority of themes, posts in category or monthly archive pages show up just as they do in the main posts page. But in some themes only the beginnings of posts are shown, and in a few themes you only get titles or thumbnails.

  I actually want to do the opposite – at my blog, http://30days2011.wordpress.com. I want to make it where Archive and Category results pages only show an excerpt, not full posts.

  Looking at this page, it seems that if you write a shorter Excerpt in that field in each post, that shorter excerpt will then show up in Archive, Category and Search results.

  However, I’ve created an excerpt for my latest post (http://30days2011.wordpress.com/2011/02/21/giving-time-means-more-than-giving-money/), and still the ENTIRE post, not just the excerpt, shows up when I select its Archive of Feb 2011, or its Category of Giving Project.

  ??? Please help! I’d really like my Archives and Category pages to only show excerpts….

  If you had consulted the posts thesacredpath and timethief had linked to, you would have found the answer: custom excerpts are supported in some themes only (and Bueno isn’t one of them). What you need is the more tag:

  Thanks everyone – and I did read that post, I just wasn’t entirely sure if he was saying that all other themes not in those lists, you couldn’t do it in.

  And if I use the more tag system, though, won’t that make it where you click to read more on ALL posts, even when they’re featured on the front page? Or would it have the “more” function just when they’re archived?

  You’re welcome.
  Yes, the more tag means truncated posts on the front page as well. If you want full posts on the front page but beginnings in archive pages, you must switch to another theme.

  This is about as close as I can get creating a work-around in CSS.

  The code will change your paragraph spacing to be the same as the line height, hide images and captions on your archive page posts (so that they don’t get chopped in half) and set the post entry section to be a specific height (a multiple of your line height). It will probably break some sentences mid way through which is unavoidable but it might be worth a try.

  The only other option is far more hands on and would involve going through all previous posts and placing all the text you want to feature on the archives page in a new div element with its own class which you can then target with CSS.

  Here’s the code anyway:

  .entry p {margin:0 0 1.5em;}
  body.archive .post .entry {height:210px;}
  body.archive .post .wp-caption, body.archive .post img {display:none;}
