show in recent posts page only the image
-
hi, I’m using wordpress.com platform and I would like to show my recent posts in the main page but just the image. The user will be able to click on the image to be redirected to the entire post. I cannot find this customization.
ThanksThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi,
The Recent Posts widget doesn’t have that option, but the Top Posts & Pages widget does.
-
If you’re okay with manually linking to the posts you want to feature, you could use Image Widgets to link images to the posts.
We also have themes like Cubic which show a grid of images that link to the full post as part of the theme’s design.
Also, if you decide to upgrade to WordPress.com Premium or Business in the future, you’d be able to add custom CSS to your site. With this, you could remove the post titles that are shown when the
Display Posts Shortcode is used, and only display the featured images for the posts instead. You could even place the Display Posts Shortcode inside of a Text Widget. -
Sorry, folks. I obviously hadn’t read the OP carefully, and presumed the question was in regard to the Recent Posts widget.

In addition to the fine suggestions made by dcoleonline, here’s a list of themes that might be suitable.
Themes with a grid-based or tiled format on the posts page, where each image in the grid or in the tile rows link to a corresponding individual post, include the following (list not updated recently):
- Autofocus (mosaic tiles w/spaces)
- Cubic (tiles)
- Fontfolio (tiles)
- Hatch (grid)
- Mixfolio (grid)
- Pictorico (tiles)
- Spun (circles)
Limited posts in grid-based or tiled format
- Canard (up to five featured content posts displayed in mosaic tiles)

thank you everyone, @dcoleonline, I’ve used the cubic widget up to now, but the problem is that people can’t find my widgets as they are really hidden in that theme. I also perfer that the posts in the main page be in the center of the screen so widgets at the footer or sides are less preferable. I may wish to upgrade later on, but for now I wish to stay with my current platform.
Twenty Ten is also a nice theme I’ve seen but I wanted to edit what I see in the posts of the main page which I couldn’t find how.
@musicdoc1, autofocus, fontfolio, hatch and the rest of the ones you mentiond have the same problems as cubic, the widgets I’ve added aren’t displayed clearly in the theme
canard is closer to what I want but I don’t think its theme goes well with my site, plus I see a bit of the texts of the posts and not just the images -
Basically I wanted two main things from my site:
– a site that shows my posts with featured images only so I see as many as my posts in the main page nicely
– see the 3 widgets – category selection, subscribe and search clearly, not hiddenI went through about 30 themes and the closest I found is ixion, though it has only post excerpts and the search widget is a bit unclear. Have a look.
If you know of a better theme or know of a different solution, I would be happy to hear -
You might like Apostrophe. See the following:
I picked it out of the Magazine style themes:
If you’d like to consider using Portfolio projects instead of posts, you might have a look at Blask (demo, theme guide), or one of the other Portfolio themes.
-
Definitely some great suggestions here @musicdoc1!
@guylis:
The Rowling theme might be an additional option for you. It’s kind of similar to Apostrophe.Twenty Ten is also a nice theme I’ve seen but I wanted to edit what I see in the posts of the main page which I couldn’t find how.
Since that is an older theme, it won’t have as many customization options as some of the newer ones.
Let us know what you think of these most recent suggestions.

thanks @musicdoc1, I tried apostrophe and I rather like the view where I see just the featured image of the post and not the except. I did miss the find option I had embedded at the top for the theme that allows me to search in the site, although I can always add another widget. A bigger problem in the theme is that for the post date for each one I see stuff like ‘days ago 3’ and not ‘3 days ago’. I think it’s a bug in the theme since for earlier dates I see it in hebrew, and in other themes I see those text in hebrew as well, it’s a shame.
@dcoleonline, I went over twenty 10 through to twenty 16, some of them are really nice but I did not see any that show just my post picture or even the excerpt, just the entire post which I don’t want,
I checked rowling now, in this one the dates are good unlike apostrophe but going into each post, the featured image in the top is too big and the text and main images in the post itself are shrunk too much. Too bad I can’t add attachments here or I would show you what I mean.
It’s great to hear all your suggestions. I went through all the 15 magazine type themes and apostrophe is the one that looks best, it’s too bad about the bug with the dates so I can’t use it.
So, right now the best option is Ixion. Let me know what you guys think
https://foxfoodreviews2.wordpress.com/
I’ve been experimenting with this blog for about 2 months and from feedback from people I need to address the following:
– need to see the options for various restaruant categories clearly
– people didn’t see my about page or contact me page
– great to see just the featured image for a restaurant review
– need to see the option to subscribe to the blog clearly
– will be nice to see facebook page and subscribe via it
– the main post page should be clear and not shrunk (like I saw in some
themes)Cubic gave me some of the things above, Ixion now gives me a little bit more :)
thanksWhat do you
-
sorry, can’t edit these things, what do you guys think of the current one?
(nice to have google translate embedded in the browser , right :) -
Regarding widget location, you say:
I also [prefer] that the posts in the main page be in the center of the screen so widgets at the footer or sides are less preferable.
And yet you’ve also specified that widgets should not be hidden, and easily seen. If posts are centered on the blog page, there will be insufficient room for sidebar widgets. Where then do you propose to put them?
Your site looks fine with Ixion, but given the often repeated preference for “just the image” or “featured images only” on the front page it strikes me that all of the posts on your front page have a featured image and text, the latter of which I presume to be excerpts of the text in the full posts. This theme feature is typically referred to as default or automatic post excerpts.
A post by staff member kathrynwp in the January 2017 topic Home Page refers to an older topic regarding themes with automatic excerpts that contained an obsolete list of such themes and provide a link to the current list. The up to date list may be found in the WordPress.com Themes Showcase by filtering it with the term “blog-excerpt,” as indicated by kathrynwp, who says:
We have a showcase filter which lists all themes that display excerpts by default:
https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/blog-excerpts
Most newer themes also have the Content Options panel in the Customizer, which allows you to choose between displaying the full post or an excerpt.

hi @musicdoc1
You’re right regarding the widget, that’s why I looked for a theme like ixion or apostrophe that showed both the menus/widgets on the side, the site pages at the top and the posts in a clear manner, both do that.
Cubic for example show the menu/widget/site pages in a hidden way that caused people to miss it.
Rowling and some other magazine type themes do show it well but are shrinking the post texts and images.
I prefer not to have the post excerpts at all but just the images like in apostrophe. That’s why I liked your proposal to look at magazine type themes. Apostrophe was nearly perfect other than the date format. I tried to find a theme exactly like apostrophe but without the date bug. Haven’t found one, so I’ll stick with ixion until I do or the date bug in apostrophe will be fixed.
Cheers -
Hi @guylis,

Fine, I understand. Do you know about the More tag? See the More Tag support page for information and instructions.
With the More tag, each post must be treated separately, but you may truncate each post, as it displays on the posts page or blog page, at the point where you insert the More tag in that post. In most themes, by inserting the More tag at the top of the post content, you prevent any of the post content from displaying on the post page. The title, the featured image (if one is set), date, etc. will still be displayed.
-
Correction:
“by inserting the More tag at the top of the post content, you prevent any of the post content from displaying on the posts page, or blog page.” -
No I haven’t known about it, tried it now with ixion blog adding
<!–more–>
it doesn’t affect the main page.
Though, in my case, what I prefer is not just to remove the excerpt, but to have a wide view of the posts like cubic or ixicon that show the different posts in a clear and numerous manner -
It’s odd that the tag didn’t work. I’ll run a test on that tomorrow on a site with Ixion applied. Will have to bid you goodnight due to the lateness here. I’ll check in on the topic and your progress tomorrow. Goodnight!
-
to have a wide view of the posts like cubic or ixicon that show the different posts in a clear and numerous manner
Understood. Hopefully we’ll find just the thing for you.

ok, following your suggestion, I read a bit about the tag and managed to get it to work. It seems that when putting this tag, not on the top of the page but in the wordpress post page for ‘post excerpt’ make the post excerpt disappear, so I’ve modified my blog accordingly. Thanks, I’ll still look for one with a wide view that looks better in my opinion for a blog about restaurant reviews
-
It seems that when putting this tag, not on the top of the page but in the wordpress post page for ‘post excerpt’ make the post excerpt disappear
We’re both correct on this point, because the result depends upon the Blog Display setting at Customize > Content Options. In tests today I found the following:
- If at Customize > Content Options > Blog Display you choose “Full Post,” then the More tag will work as designed when inserted into the post content (post editor window), and will not work if inserted into the Excerpt box of the post editor.
- If the More tag is inserted at the top of the post content, then only a “Continue Reading” link will appear instead of the content.
- If at Customize > Content Options > Blog Display you choose “Post Excerpt,” then the More tag will work when inserted into the Excerpt box of the post editor, and without creating a “Continue Reading” link, but it will not work at all if inserted into the post content.
Turning to another subject, I think it’s odd and unfortunate if indeed there are no themes comparable to Portfolio themes such as Blask (demo) and Orvis (demo), in which a blog or posts page can be made to resemble a static front page with the Portfolio Page Template assigned, and sidebar widgets, as on these attractive themes.
- If at Customize > Content Options > Blog Display you choose “Full Post,” then the More tag will work as designed when inserted into the post content (post editor window), and will not work if inserted into the Excerpt box of the post editor.
