Show [Read more] only if <!–more–> is used.

    Hello,

I am quite frustrated that I cannot find the answer to this simple question. I ONLY want the [Read more] option shown if the post uses the <!–more–> tag. However, everything I find in regards to this shows the [Read more] link at all times. How do I do this?

It shouldn’t be this hard to get this answered, but apparently everyone wants the [Read more] link displayed at all times. And this frustrates me way too much for my own good. So, help is appreciated.

Please provide a link to the blog you are asking about so we can take a look, starting with http://

It’s not necessary to take a look at my blog. I don’t see how it can possibly help you answer my question. I do use a custom theme but even that isn’t really relevant. I just want to know what code I need to achieve the following:

The only [Read more] code I have is: http://codex.wordpress.org/Customizing_the_Read_More

However, this code will *AT ALL TIMES* show the [Read More] link. I ONLY want this link to show up if my post actually has a <!–more–> tag in it. What code do I need to use to achieve this?

I’m sorry if I am not calm and composed, but this is ridiculously hard to figure out.

The information in the wordpress.ORG codex applies only to wordpress.ORG installs. This is thw wordpress.COM support gotum. We provide support only to those who have free blogs from and being free hosted by wordpress.COM. Our support documentation is found here > http://en.support.wordpress.COM and there are several ways and means of splitting text. http://en.support.wordpress.com/tag/split/

This is a peer support forum. We require the URL for the blog in question because up 30% of the questions we answer are being posed bvy wordpress.ORG bloggers who fail to read the sticky post at the head of this forum. > https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/please-read-me-first-before-posting?replies=1

OOPS! Pleas excuse the typos above. I am visually impaired. This sentence above > “This is thw wordpress.COM support gotum.” was meant to read “This is the wordpress.COM support forum.”.

Perhaps if the support system for WordPress was clearer then I wouldn’t have posted here, my apologies. The last thing I want to do is read a stickied post when I spent 2 hours searching for an answer and can’t find it. Ever considered adding this information to the actual post screen https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/support#postform ?

“Is this a WordPress.com blog or do you host one yourself?” And maybe inform users there, that would reduce the posts of WordPress.org users.

We have asked that question a million different ways a million different times and wasted SO much time when people give us the wrong answer.

We don’t control what appears on the post screen etc, we’re just volunteers in the forum.

@ sanne27 “Ever considered adding this information to the actual post screen https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/support#postform ?”

Erm… the link actually says “wordpress.com” so why would a wordpress.org user want to post a question there anyway?

It is equally impossible to answer a question, or to find an answer, if one looks only in the wrong places.

The friendly support-bot has cut-down on the number of people using .org software who waste their time, and ours, looking for help in this forum. But it isn’t a perfect solution.

We can post by email and via a telephone, and perhaps someday the technology will be developed to a point where it will be possible to see links to the blogs folk are asking about.
